Two masked robbers threatened a member of staff at a petrol station before escaping with cash, alcohol and cigarettes.

The shop, on the site of the Budgens supermarket in Granite Way, Mountsorrel, was targeted at 3.50am on Tuesday.

Two men, both wearing balaclavas, left in a black Honda CRV and drove off in the direction of the nearby A6.

Police have urged anyone who saw the car speeding away from the scene or who has information about the robbery to contact them urgently.

Guy Coombs, the store's general manager, said: "The member of staff was threatened but fortunately he wasn't hurt.

"He was quite shaken but he is back at work. We're all doing what we can to make sure he's okay.

"The men who did this knew exactly what they were doing and what they wanted to achieve by it.

"Although it happened early in the morning, this is a busy area and there would have been someone who saw something suspicious.

"We want them to talk to the police if they know anything about the men who did this.

"These men need to be caught before they do this to someone else."

Councillor Stan Coats, a member of Mountsorrel Parish Council, said: "This is a very peaceful village and crime is low, so it was shocking to hear that the petrol station had been robbed.

"It is very near to the A6, so it is easily accessible, so the men who did this could be from anywhere.

"It is good to hear that the member of staff was not hurt in any way and, hopefully, the police will catch the two men very soon."

Detective Constable Dave Rock said: "Thankfully, the member of staff was not hurt, but they were shaken by the threats made by the two men.

"At the time of the incident, the victim waved to the driver of a white van that was passing.

"We are appealing to that driver to come forward. If you drive a white van and normally take that route to or from work, please think back. Were you in the area that day? Did you see anything suspicious?

"Although it was very early in the morning we are hopeful someone out there will be able to help us."

Contact Det Con Rock on 101 or Crimestoppers, which is anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
