Police today named and shamed more than 30 drug dealers who were nailed during a major operation which was launched a year ago. The campaign, codenamed Operation Nutmeg, targeted street dealers in the Highfields area of Leicester.• Click HERE to see images of all 34 offenders. Residents told police that hard drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine were being sold openly in their neighbourhood. Police began gathering intelligence on the dealers a year ago before launching two waves of arrests in May, June and October. The raids yielded thousands of pounds in cash, mobile phones, drugs paraphernalia and cannabis. Police have today released details of 34 people whose cases have now concluded in the courts. Together the dealers have been jailed for a total of more than 60 years. Detective Superintendent Andy Lee said: "This operation began after members of the local community contacted the police to say they were concerned about drugs in their area. "This was causing anti social behaviour and blighting the area and community in which they lived. "We then began a lengthy and complex investigation which required us to work with local communities to identify those who were suspected of being involved in drugs supply. "I am extremely pleased with the results of the operation. Local beat officers, tactical support officers and detectives worked to ensure enough evidence was gathered to put before the CPS. "In all of the cases the evidence gathered was so strong that the offenders pleaded guilty. "There is no place for illegal drugs in our communities and by working together we have proved that we can stop it. "We would urge residents to continue to work with us to keep Leicester a safe place to work and live. "I hope that the results of this operation will send a clear message to those who deal in illegal drugs in Leicester - We will find out who you are, we will arrest you and you will be brought to justice."
