Olympic medallist Colin Jackson has helped officially open new fitness facilities at a leisure centre in Oadby.

The sprint and hurdling athlete revealed the new facilities at Everyone Active's Parklands Leisure Centre to members of the public at their open day yesterday.(SAT)

From 9am until 6pm, people were able to try out some free activities and test the new and improved facilities on offer.

Dan Hicks, contract manager for Everyone Active, said: "We're extremely proud of the transformation of Parklands Leisure Centre and the open day was a great opportunity for everyone to have fun and try out the new equipment for free.

"We're very grateful for the support we've received from Colin Jackson and we were delighted to have him launch the event and take part in the celebrations."

Master instructor sessions and virtual exercise class demonstrations took place throughout the day and visitors had free access to the gym.

As well as opening the facilities, Colin also took part in a 15 minutes fitness challenge, which members of the community were dared to try and beat.

Mr Hicks added: "With such a wide range of activities on offer, we wanted the local community to get together with friends and family and try out the amazing new facilities at the centre."

Part of the leisure centre's transformation, includes an incredible 115-station gym and two new group exercise studios, including virtual classes and indoor cycling facilities.

The centre will also receive a brand new six-lane swimming pool with changing facilities later in the year, which will complete the £4million transformation.

E-cigarette users warned to follow safety advice after recharging batteries explode

E-cigarette users are being warned to take extra care following a rise in safety concerns.

Trading standards officers are issuing safety advice to retailers following an increase in complaints of e-cigarette batteries and chargers exploding or overheating.

Last year two local users had near misses when their e-cigarettes exploded.

One incident wrote off a car and another badly damaged a bedroom.

County officers tested five samples and two failed due to issues with the chargers, such as access to live parts, European plugs supplied rather than British plugs and bad construction quality.

County council cabinet member for trading standards, Joe Orson, said: "E-cigarettes may be popular, but please don't put you and your family's safety at risk.

"We want both consumers and retailers to be vigilant to prevent further accidents occurring."

Letters are being sent to retailers setting out their responsibilities, providing them with a safety advice poster to display to consumers and issuing advice to users.

In April Aylestone mum Kim Taylor escaped injury when her car was written off because a recharging e-cigarette exploded.

Kim, 54, said: "I am glad trading standards are telling people of the possible dangers. I won't risk them now and have stopped using them. Unfortunately I am smoking again."

Two months earlier Jonathan Tovey's bedroom in Hathern was badly damaged when his shisha pen exploded.

Red hot shards from the small metal pipe flew across the room setting fire to the carpet and a chair.

Fortunately the 23-year-old was not in the room at the time.

He said: "If I had been smoking it when it exploded, it would have taken half my face off."

Dave Bull, head of Leicestershire County Council trading standards, said: "We will continue to enforce the safety laws that apply to these products.

"We know that the use of e-cigarettes is on the increase and want to warn residents to be aware of the potential dangers particularly when charging them."

Users are being warned to use the charger supplied with the e-cigarette. Never leave e-cigarettes plugged in overnight or unattended.

People should also look for the CE mark that indicates the charger complies with European Safety standards.

Search on for owner of tiny religious porcelain figurine at top of chimney due for demolition

A tiny religious porcelain figurine thought to have been put on top of an 85ft industrial chimney to watch over those below has been rescued by a demolition company.

The six-inch tall figure of the Virgin Mary is thought to have been cemented onto the top of the chimney, in Bradgate Street, Woodgate, Leicester, by the chimney's builder in the 1800s.

The chimney is being demolished after fire ripped through the building below last month, (Dec) destroying the disused property.

William Eyre, owner of Lost World Demolition, which is taking the chimney down, said: "We do a lot of chimneys, but I've never come across anything like this and I've been doing this for 33 years."

Burly workers, including Kev Pole, 46, of Hallaton and 30-year-old Adam Park, of New Parks, Leicester, delicately chipped away at the concrete holding the figurine before bringing it down to earth.

Mr Eyre added: "It's definitely old, it's made of pot and it's got little roses on it, we'll take it away and get it cleaned up.Let's hope we find an owner for it.

"The chimney was repaired about 10 years ago so it could have gone up then."

The Leicester Mercury was first alerted to the figurine by Mark Oliver, who works at the nearby Halfords auto centre.

His colleague, Nigel Sawyer, who now works at the company's Long Eaton, Derbyshire branch said: "The story is that it was put there as a finishing touch.

"A steeplejack who came into the Woodgate centre pointed it out to one of the lads. You could see something with the naked eye right at the top of the chimney.

"One of the lads brought in a telescope and you could see it quite clearly.

"He said the chimney builder had put it up there. It was a curiosity and it was quite interesting to be told about it."

Stuart Bailey, chairman of Leicester Civic Society, said: "I've not heard of anything like that before."

Do you know who put the figurine there?

If you do, please contact the Leicester Mercury news desk on 0116 222 4241.

A lingerie business set up in Leicester just over two years ago is already reaching an international audience.

Tutti Rouge specialises in sexy underwear for women with bra sizes 28D to 38J and has just launched its new range of clothes in 12 countries around the world with the help of Made in Chelsea actress Ashley James, who is the brand's model.

The new Kiss and Tell autumn/winter collection will be going on sale at shops including Salon de La Lingerie in Paris, Moda in Birmingham and Curve New York.

Ashley said: "As a curvy girl I just love working with a brand who offers fun and flirty lingerie in big cups and small back sizes.

"Personally, I think the Kiss and Tell collection is the prettiest yet - a fabulous mix of colour, tones and signature Tutti finishes like love hearts and bows.

"I love that Tutti offers cute and girly sets for girls with curves. It's cute and girly, while still being fun and flirty."

Tutti Rouge launched in 2012 by Jessica Prebble, who has more than 18 years experience in the lingerie industry.

Jessica, who is the company's creative director and designs all the clothes, said: "As a local brand, we're delighted with the overwhelming response which Tutti Rouge has received globally.

"Our fuller bust lingerie styles are now stocked in over 12 countries and the likes of Daisy Lowe, Gemma Collins, Josie Gibson and Ashley James all have Tutti in their lingerie drawer.

"In only two years, Tutti Rouge has come so far and we look forward to the future."

The company currently employs four people based at the headquarters in Rowley Fields, Leicester. The products are all designed locally in Leicester and then made overseas in Thailand.

In Leicestershire the products are sold in the new Bravissimo Pepperberry shop in the former Waterstones building in Market Street, Leicester, and at Bare Essentials in Churchgate, Loughborough.

Elsewhere, Tutti Rouge is available to buy online on the Big Cartel website, Asos Marketplace and around the UK in independent lingerie boutiques.

Tudor Road student housing project set to go ahead after long wait

A massive, unused industrial site in the heart of a neighbourhood is finally to be turned into student flats.

The Grade II listed Fiveways House in Tudor Road, which used to be a textile factory, has had planning permission for 255 flats for several years, but due to the recession the work was put on hold.

Now Emerging Property, based in London, has announced is has bought the site and will now begin work on a £18.5 million student development with a gym, cinema and other facilities.

Companies have been trying to develop the site since 2004.

Leicester City Council initially refused planning permission but the Government overruled the council in 2009.

Local councillor Ted Cassidy said: "The issue that concerns residents in that area is parking but, overall, they want to see that very run-down site being put right.

"It's been empty and just covered in scaffolding for years now."

Derek Skinner, 83, who lives in the street, said: "It's been like this a long time and I think it's about time they did something with it.

"I think the trouble is it's going to be a big building of flats very near the houses and overlooking them.

"It would be better to have a car park."

Pawel Wisniewski, 32, who lives opposite the site, said: "I have nothing against it but it looks pretty strange as it is.

"I would like it to be finished and I think flats would be good here."

The Victorian building was badly damaged by a fire in 2008 but Emerging Property said it would be restored in keeping with its original architecture.

The company was also responsible for the College Street Village student development in Highfields and the award-winning Kibworth House Estate project.

James Harrington of Emerging Property said: "We identified Leicester as a prime city for a student development with quality universities, a large and expanding international student population and an existing housing crisis.

"Tudor Studios has been designed to satisfy the requirements of the modern day student.

"Not only will this help to regenerate this part of Leicester, but will also boost the attraction of Leicester's universities, with quality accommodation a key aspect of the overall student experience

Ambulance bosses apologise after woman spent three hours on the floor

Ambulance officials have apologised and promised an investigation after a woman was left lying on the floor of her home for more than three hours.

Sarah Langley, who suffers from cellulitis, an infection of the deepest layers of the skin and tissue underneath, fell out of bed around 3am on Wednesday (Jan 21).

The 44-year-old weighs around 27stone and her husband, Andrew was unable to move her.

He said: "Sarah just rolled out of the bed and I couldn't move her.

"I rang for an ambulance and explained the situation but I was told the service was very busy and because my wife was breathing and was coherent my call was counted as non-life threatening."

Mr Langley, 47, put quilt over his wife and put her head on a pillow to try and keep her comfortable.

A crew eventually arrived at the couple's Braunstone Frith home at 6.45am.

Mr Langley said: "They told me it was their first job of the day but they didn't have any bariatric equipment so couldn't help my wife and to call out another ambulance."

A second vehicle with special equipment was called out to help Mrs Langley.

However, when that arrived Mr Langley said that the battery on the hoist was flat and so could not be used.

He added: "They did manage to get my wife up with the help of an inflatable chair and she was finally admitted to hospital at around 9.30am."

Officials at East Midlands Ambulance Service (Emas) have apologised for the delay.

Tim Slater, Emas general manager for Leicestershire and Rutland said: "As with all UK ambulance services, we have experienced a significant increase in demand with thousands more calls being received than the same period last year putting significant strain on our service.

"However, the service we provided to Mrs Langley would appear to have fallen short of the high standard our patients should expect and we are very sorry about that."

He added: "We will investigate what happened and provide a response to Mrs Langley as soon as the facts are known."

Councillor Peter Batty 'mortified' after claims he has been sending 'racist' and 'sexist' e-mails

0
0

A Conservative councillor has said he is "mortified" to think that any of the e-mails he has sent have offended anyone, after a national newspaper claimed he has been sending "racist" and "sexist" messages.

Hinckley and Bosworth borough and Groby parish Councillor Peter Batty, said he never "intended to be racist, sexist, or cause offence or severe upset" by e-mails he has sent.

This comes after the Daily Mirror claimed Coun Batty had issued a "grovelling apology" after forwarding a "series of sexist, racist and pornographic e-mails".

Coun Batty said: "I am genuinely mortified at the thought of anyone being offended by the e-mails I have sent.

"If anyone is offended, I without a doubt apologise to them and I appeal to them to get in contact with me, so I can apologise personally."

Coun Batty said he receives "hundreds" of e-mails containing jokes on his personal e-mail account - which is separate from his work account - each year.

"It's nice to have a chuckle from time to time," he said.

"I only ever forwarded on funny e-mails to people I know."

He said he cannot recall any of the e-mails the Daily Mirror refers to in their article, which refers to messages containing "gags about black women being involved in a plane crash" and poking "fun at Indian taxi-drivers, as well as Irish and Jewish people."

He said: "The only one I can remember, vaguely - but this was sent to me some time ago - was an e-mail titled 'a*** of the year' showing a number of women's rears. At the bottom of the -mail it said 'I bet you thought this e-mail was going to be all about Nick Clegg'.

"I thought it was humorous and I thought other people in my political group would find it amusing, so I forwarded it on.

"It was a throw away joke - I looked at it, chuckled and moved on."

Coun Batty said he will definitely be more wary about who he sends his e-mails to.

"With election time approaching, this is silly season," he said.

"And when you put yourself in the spotlight like I do, you have to be prepared to be shot at."

He added that he will not be forwarding on any more funny e-mails he receives in the future.

Hospital bosses have defended giving a 10-year-old girl a contraceptive implant

Hospital bosses have defended giving a 10-year-old girl a contraceptive implant.

They said that the implant, which was revealed through a Freedom of Information request, would only have been given in "exceptional" circumstances.

A city GP said that in more than 20 years of practising she had never come across such a case.

Dr Angela Lennox, a GP in the St Matthew's area of the city, said: "I have never been involved in a situation where contraception was either required of requested by someone of this age.

"This must have been a truly exceptional case and it would not have been a decision which was taken lightly."

She added that for the hormonal implant, which works by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary by slowly releasing progestogen into the body, to be given it would be out of the hands of a GP.

Dr Lennox said: "It would require special input from an expert and would not be a decision for a GP."

However she shared concerns that many adults would immediately have on hearing of a 10-year-old requiring contraception.

Dr Lennox said: "We need to look beyond this. There may have been other issues such as severe learning difficulties which would makes an individual very vulnerable."

But Dr Lennox said she was concerned about the long-term effects of providing hormones to children who had not yet reached puberty.

The contraceptive implant is a small flexible tube about 40mm long which is inserted under the skin of the upper arm.

It is inserted by a trained professional, such as a doctor and lasts for three years.

A spokesman for Leicester's hospitals said that to protect patient confidentiality no comment could be made on the circumstances of the case.

He added: "Only under extremely rare circumstances would a patient under the age of 13 ever receive a contraceptive implant.

"This is never taken lightly and would be a decision made between a healthcare professional and the parent or guardian as a result of health problems or in order to safeguard the child."

Paige Jackson: Friend of pregnant woman killed on Saffron Lane confident road will be made safer

A woman who has been campaigning to make Saffron Lane, Leicester safer after her pregnant friend was knocked down and killed is confident changes will be made after meeting with an MP and members of the council.

Jodie Cooper, 24, of Aylestone, set up an e-petition last year to get a speed camera put up in Saffron Lane.

She decided to take action after her school friend, Paige Jackson was killed crossing the road last February.

Paige, 22, was just weeks away from giving birth to her son, who died following the accident.

On Friday, Jodie met up with MP for Leicester South Jon Ashworth, Saffron and the Freeman Ward Councillor Elly Cutkelvin and council officers at the accident site to look at ways of improving road safety.

"It went really well, it was a very positive meeting," said mother-of-two Jodie.

"It sounds like changes are really going to start happening."

Jodie said Mr Ashworth and Coun Cutkelvin both seemed like they really wanted to get behind her campaign.

"It's so nice to have their backing," she added.

"I was just a one-man band trying to make a difference but finally it seems progress is being made," she said.

Jodie said they walked down Saffron Lane and analysed the speed in traffic.

"Almost every car we saw sped up, especially near the traffic lights," she said.

"I think they try and get through the traffic lights before they go red."

Mr Ashworth said that following the meeting, council officials had gone away to come up with a proposal as to how the road could be made safer.

"I think everyone recognised something needs to get done," he said.

"But we can't get complacent, we need to keep the pressure on.

"Jodie is clearly very passionate about this, I must pay tribute to how determined she's been."

Mr Ashworth said he was "determined" to continue the campaign and "will not give up on this".

"I'm doing this as a parent myself but also for the residents," he said.

The petition set up by Jodie has nearly reached 2,000 signatures.

Floyd Mangove, (22), of Hopyard Close, Gilmorton estate, off Lutterworth Road, Leicester, was jailed for seven-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to causing Paige's death by driving dangerously.

Leicester City scored twice in the last 10 minutes to complete a remarkable comeback to book their place in the last 16 of the FA Cup. Jeff Schlupp found the net deep into stoppage time as Nigel Pearson's men came from a goal down at White Hart Lane. Leonardo Ulloa had levelled the scoring with seven minutes left to play to cancel out Andros Townsend's first-half penalty. City were convinced they should have had a penalty of their own when Andrej Kramaric was brought down by Spurs goalkeeper Michel Vorm, but referee Robert Madley booked the Croatia striker for diving. Members of the Muslim community hand out free treats to shoppers in Leicester

Members of the Muslim community handed out free balloons and sweets to city centre shoppers on Saturday, as a way of promoting peace and equality.

A handful of young people spent the afternoon on Humberstone Gate, Leicester, giving away free goodies to children.

The 'random act of kindness' was done in hope of countering any bad press the Muslim community has recently been given.

Raheema Caratella, a volunteer at the Muslim Khatri Association, said: "We wanted to show people that we stand united with other communities.

"We want to share the message of peace and equality."

The group had a total of 1,000 balloons and 1,000 packs of sweets to give away.

"It was really well received," added Raheema.

"I'm very happy and positive about the response we got."

The event was a joint venture lead by the young people of the Muslim Khoja Shia Ithnasheri community and the Muslim Khatri Association.

Police warning over craze for inhaling potentially lethal 'laughing gas'

0
0

Police are warning people about the potentially lethal drug craze of inhaling 'laughing gas'. Officers are encountering a growing number of people, particularly the young, using a substance called nitrous oxide. The gas, which can be bought legally in small canisters and has practical industrial uses, produces a euphoria but floods users' lungs and can cause unconsciousness or death due to a lack of oxygen. Mixing it with alcohol is particularly dangerous, police said. Police are stepping up patrols in parks and streets across the city and county where they have evidence of people using nitrous oxide by releasing it into a balloon and inhaling it. Warning signs are also being put up in areas – typically parks and open spaces – where officers believe people are gathering to use it. The campaign is part on the ongoing Operation Nitrox – which was launched by the force last year to highlight the risks of so-called legal highs. Stacey McSharry, Leicestershire Police's substance misuse officer said officers across the city and county were reporting a growing number of finds of discarded canisters. She said: "On the back of Operation Nitrox we had a massive increase in intelligence from officers and other organisations about these substances. "That is positive because it is giving us the information we need to take action. "Most of it was about the powders, pills and herbal mixtures, but we have also started to hear more cases of officers finding empty nitrous oxide canisters. "That's why we have produced posters which we are placing in areas where we know there is misuse or where we believe people are using it. "We are also increasing patrols in those areas where we know there has been activity. "Loosely, it is placed under the banner of legal highs and it came from the night time economy, particularly abroad on some of the 'party islands'. "It seems to have moved to the UK and we are seeing people using it in streets and parks and, from what we've seen on social media, it seems to be younger people using it now. "It is not an epidemic but it is an area where we believe we have more work to do and we will continue telling people there are risks associated with nitrous oxide." One of the areas targeted by the police campaign in the past few weeks is the Coleman ward area of the city. Officers from the local Spinney Hill Park police station have discovered discarded canisters in the area and have stepped up patrols to identify users. Inspector Ben Gillard, commander of Spinney Hill Park police station, said: "Drugs misuse can cause local communities a huge amount of harm and I would encourage anyone with any concerns about this type of activity in their area to get in touch with us, so we can take action." Leicestershire Police launched Operation Nitrox in August last year in response to the rapid development of legal highs on the drugs scene. Officers are urging the public to let them know who is selling the substances, which often come in the form of powders, pills or herbal mixes. Some of the substances, which have been linked to deaths across the country, have been declared illegal under the Misuse of Drugs Act. Others have not yet been classified illegal drugs, but Leicestershire Police and local trading standards officers said yesterday selling potentially harmful substances was covered by consumer protection laws. Testing of samples obtained by Leicestershire Police showed some contained illegal drugs or harmful chemicals. The force said many people buy the substances online, while a number of shops in the city and county stock them. Officers, who also believe some of the substances are being sold at car boot sales, are visiting schools across the city and county to spell out the dangers. A fourteen-year-old boy who has not had one day off school since 2009 has won a special award at an event celebrating children in care.

Leicestershire County Council host the occasion every year to mark the achievements of the 450 children in its care and over 200 care leavers.

At this year's event which took place over two nights, last Wednesday and Thursday at Loughborough University Jordan Betteridge, of Thornton, won the personal attainment award for having a remarkable 100 per cent record.

Jordan, who goes to South Charnwood School, in Markfield, said he felt excited when they were describing the person who won the award.

"I did not know if it would be me or not. I was kind of scared too."

Jordan won a trophy, a pen and a voucher.

He said the trophy will now sit proudly on his side in his room.

Jordan's foster mum Judith Billington, 51, of Thornton, said: "I am extremely pleased for him. He came to live with us in November 2009 and he has not had a day off since then."

Andrew Morris, South Charnwood High School head teacher, said: "We are very proud of him. It is a remarkable achievement - he has not had one morning or afternoon off.

"His recognition is thoroughly deserved. He is a hard working person who will do his best."

Jordan's story was just one of the inspiring tales which were celebrated at last week's children in care awards, where more than 250 nominations were received.

Chloe Cunningham, 17, of Burbage, was also the winner of a special accolade, she won the Culture and Arts Award.

She said: "It was a big surprise."

Chloe was nominated for her dedication to music. A few of her recent achievements include landing a lead role in a musical and going to Westminster to represent Leicestershire's children in care alongside the Children's Commissioner.

Chloe also sang at the awards ceremony.

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: "I look forward to these annual events, and always leave thoroughly inspired by what can be achieved by some of the most vulnerable children in our care."

Local rugby: Leicester Lions grit teeth to hold on for Birmingham & Solihull win

Leicester Lions held off a spirited second-half comeback from Birmingham & Solihull to take a bonus-point 29-25 and get back to winning ways in National Two North.

Birmingham started the brighter of the two sides and it was the Bees who struck first, moving the ball out wide to go over for the game's opening try.

Lions got themselves on level terms as Devon Constant broke just before the quarter-hour to score in the corner with Jonathan Boden converting.

Lions then took the lead when pressure in the scrum saw the referee award a penalty try, which Boden converted.

David Williams broke through the Bees defence to go over for the Lions' third try, although Boden failed to convert.

A penalty from the visitors saw the lead cut but Lions added another before the break, as Robert Young went over for his side's fourth try right on half-time.

Lions added a penalty through Boden early in the second half but the Bees finally found some sting in their tail as they started to
exert sustained pressure on the home defence, adding two tries, with one of them converted.

Despite adding another penalty, it was not enough for Birmingham as excellent Lions' defence in their own 22 saw them hold out for a crucial victory.

Loughborough Students won for the second week on the bounce as they beat Old Albanians 30-20 to ease relegation fears in National One.

The home side took the lead through Tom James' penalty after 10 minutes.

Albanians replied nine minutes later to level it up at 3-3.

The Students then got the crucial first score as full-back Jack Pons made a line break to set up James. The scrum-half converted his own try to make it 10-3 at half-time.

After the break, James added a penalty to put the hosts in charge.

But the Hertfordshire side fought back with a try of their own to make it 13-10.

Five minutes later, the away side had their first lead of the game as they went over for their second try of the game.

Loughborough replied with a try by on-loan Cornish Pirate Jake Parker to give them back the lead.

The scores were level soon after at 20-20 after an Albanians penalty, but two late tries by Pons and Yiannis Loizias gave the home side the bonus-point win.

Director of rugby Dave Morris was pleased with the victory and said: "To score four tries and, just as importantly, make sure Old Albanians came away with no points was great.

"They are a good side and they showed in the first half of the season that they can put a string of wins together.

"That's our challenge now, we've put two wins together at home and now we need to back it up against Blaydon (on Saturday)."
