Police arrested 20 drink drivers this weekend – bringing the total number of offenders caught since the beginning of December to 52. The force is staging extra patrols across the city and county until the end of the month, covering the busy Christmas and New Year's Eve celebrations. Since the campaign was launched at the beginning of the month they have caught 52 offenders – men and women aged between 18 and 71. Chief Inspector Stephen Potter, head of the force's road policing unit, said: "Twenty drivers risked both their lives, and those of innocent people this weekend. "It is not worth the risk. "If you choose to drink and drive our patrols, which operate around the clock, will catch you. "You don't have to feel drunk to be too drunk to drive, even a small amount of alcohol affects your response times." The force highlighted some of the cases its officers dealt with over the weekend. Shortly before midnight on Friday, CCTV cameras recorded a vehicle crashing outside a community centre in Leicester. The driver admitted to police that he was over the legal drink drive limit. A 32 year old man who was seen driving at speed with no lights was detained by officers at 11.30pm on Sunday. Also on Sunday officers were called to the scene of a crash and found a 48-year-old women staggering and unsteady on her feet near her vehicle. The woman was tested and found to be over the limit.
