What Leicester City side would you pick for Millwall? - Rob Tanner's blog

It is going to be very interesting to see what side Nigel Pearson picks to face Millwall on Saturday. Pearson's selections so far this season have been very predictable because of City's good run of results. He has resisted the temptation to tinker and change a winning team, and it has served him well. Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy joked last week that if City didn't opt for their favoured 4-4-2 formation at Portman Road, then someone could smack him in the face with a wet copy of the Radio Times. I wonder if his face was stinging on Saturday night? City went for a 4-3-3 because of the absence of Anthony Knockaert through suspension and the lack of a ready-made replacement. Pearson's hand was forced. Dean Hammond came in for his first league start of the season and was arguably City's best player during a poor first half. Then Pearson introduced Matty James and Ignasi Miquel. Both hadn't started a league game since the defeat at Charlton in August. All three produced impressive performances and injected a freshness in the second half, leading to City's transformation and victory. With Knockaert back after serving his ban, Pearson faces a real conundrum. Does he go back to the 4-4-2 formation and bring the Frenchman straight back in, or does he stick with the system he utilised in Suffolk, with Hammond and James coming into a three man midfield? Does he rest Liam Moore, who has been so good this season, and play Marcin Wasilewski at right-back and Miquel in the centre of defence, as he did in the second half at Ipswich? It is going to be an eagerly-awaited team selection on Saturday, but whatever system he opts for it does illustrate a very important point. City have a small squad of 23 players but what it lacks in size it appears to gain in substance. There is genuine strength in depth when you consider players as good as Hammond, James and Miquel have had to wait so long to start a league game. Then there is Jeff Schlupp, Gary Taylor-Fletcher and Chris Wood, who have not started all that many games, and Ritchie De Laet has been missing for well over a month through injury. Then throw in Sean St Ledger, a Republic of Ireland international who has been plagued by injury this season. There is a sense of confidence that, whoever comes into the side, will do a job that will help City maintain their momentum after their good start to the season. The transfer window opens in January and, while I don't expect City to do a lot of business, I think Pearson may well add a couple of players to his squad to further boost the strength in depth. Pearson doesn't like huge squads which become littered with discontented players who can't get a game, so there is no chance of a lot of signings, but one or two might just provide a little boost at a timely point in the season. In the meantime, City fans can try picking the side they would choose to face the Lions on Saturday. What side would you choose?
