Parts of the Great Central Way are to be temporarily closed for repair works. Leicester City Council is to carry out resurfacing work on the route, which is popular with cyclists, pedestrians and horse riders, and links the city centre and Glen Parva The improvements, costing £60,000, will take place between Evesham Road and Harefield Avenue, Rowley Fields. The Great Central Way is part of the National Cycle Network, but its existing surface has suffered badly from subsidence and surface damage over the years. The repairs will be done in two stages. From Monday June 24 to Friday, June 28, the stretch from Evesham Road to the canal bridge behind Foxcroft Close will be closed for resurfacing. There will be a diversion along Narborough Road or an alternative route towards Aylestone Meadows, though this will not be unsuitable for wheelchairs or horses. The second phase of work involves resurfacing the footpath which runs from the rear of Foxcroft Close to Braunstone Lane East. It will take place from Monday July 8, to Friday, July 12. The works will take place between 7.30am and 4pm, Monday to Friday only, with the Great Central Way open as normal on weekends. There will be marshals to help people struggling with the diversions.
