Life-saving equipment worth £5,500 has been stolen in a raid on a depot storing search and rescue equipment used to find missing people. A heart defibrillator machine worth £1,800 is among the items taken from Leicestershire Search and Rescue's storage facility in Woodville, on the Leicestershire/ Derbyshire border. Volunteers with the Ashby-based charity, which specialises in "high risk" missing persons operations, discovered the break-in at the Station Road depot on Friday. Simon Headley, recruitment and development officer, said: "Our store is one of three adjoining units in the same building. "They entered through a door at the back and smashed a window to get into our place. "Along with the defibrillator, other important and valuable medical equipment was stolen." Mr Headley believes the burglary took place on either Tuesday or Wednesday last week. The charity, which is staffed by fully-trained emergency volunteers, provides support to the police, local authorities and other organisations. Affiliated to the Association of Lowland Search and Rescue (ALSAR) it is also on standby to provide critical support at the scenes of disasters such as major fires or floods. "As a voluntary run scheme we rely heavily on the support of the donations and sponsorship to ensure that we can deliver this vital service," said Mr Headley. "It's a massive blow to lose all this life-saving kit." Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Derbyshire police on the 101 number.
