A 70-year-old man was attacked from behind and knocked to the ground by two thugs who then stole his wallet.
The victim was assaulted in Broom Leys Road, Coalville, at 11.30pm on Friday night.
He was able to walk home but was later taken to hospital where he was treated for cuts and bruises.
Detective Constable Julia Newton said: "This was a nasty incident involving an elderly man who had been out enjoying a night at the pub.
"Fortunately he wasn't seriously injured.
"Street robberies such as this are very rare in North West Leicestershire, and ones involving elderly victims are rarer still.
"I am hoping that there may be someone who saw something which can help bring those responsible before the courts."
