Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman's body was found inside a flat.

Paramedics discovered the woman in a second-floor flat in Gallico Close, Loughborough, shortly after 8pm on Wednesday.

It was unclear last night who called the East Midlands Ambulance Service crew to the scene and why.

The woman was expected to be formally identified last night or early today, once the results of a post-mortem examination were known.

Leicestershire Police said detectives were waiting to speak to a 30-year-old man about the woman's death.

The man was in hospital last night and unfit to be interviewed.

The nature of his illness has not been released.

Yesterday, police community support officers were stationed at the front of the flat while officers carried out door-to-door inquiries.

Neighbours reacted with shock to the news.

Gary Brooker, 46, was picking his daughter up from school yesterday when he heard about the death.

Mr Brooker, who lives in nearby Charteris Close, said: "Years ago, this area used to have a bad reputation. People used to call it Colditz because of the way it looked.

"But things have changed a lot up here and it is a nice place to live, with lots of families.

"That's why it's such a shock to hear that a woman has died and the police are saying it's murder."

Another neighbour, who lives in the same block as the woman, said: "I didn't know her very well but she seemed like a nice person and seemed to keep herself to herself.

"It's awful to think that someone has died like this so close by."

Another resident said: "This is a quiet area but it seems even more quiet today.

"People are beginning to hear now that a woman has died and that the police are saying she has been murdered.

"I think there's a general shock around the place, even though most people don't seem to have known this poor woman."

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Cure, who is leading the investigation into the woman's death, stressed inquiries were in their early stages.

He said: "I would like speak to anyone who saw someone coming and going from the address between Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon.

"Did you see or hear anything unusual?

"Any information could help with our inquiries."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, which is anonymous, on 0800 555111.
