Martyn Waghorn says pressure is on City to get another big win

Leicester City will be under pressure to repeat their impressive six-goal destruction of Ipswich Town, said striker Martyn Waghorn.

The 22-year-old striker, who scored his first goal of the season as City served up a real thumping for the Tractor Boys, said the victory will raise expectations of further beatings.

But, while City can take confidence from their performance, Waghorn said they must retain their focus ahead of two tough away trips to Yorkshire, at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and Leeds United on Tuesday.

"It is going to put a bit of extra pressure on us, having won 6-0, but that is not the be all and end all," he said.

"We need to play well but we take one game as it comes because we have a tough fixture away at Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend.

"If we play well as we can do then the confidence and the ability will come through. It is nice going into the weekend on the back of this result.

"We have played better against other teams but haven't scored the goals. Against Ipswich, it was one of those days, but it gives us a boost going into a busy schedule.

"The boys have been speaking about how we were going to get a good result like that, with the way we have been playing, but this is just one result and we need to take confidence from it and build on it."

Waghorn has been in good form recently since returning to the side following Jamie Vardy's calf injury. But the England under-21 international knows there is fierce competition for a place in City's strike force.

"It is nice to have the competition at the club because it drives us on," he said.

"David Nugent is great to play alongside. He works hard, grafts, is good in the air and can finish. Then there is Jamie, who is back from injury now

"Big Marko Futacs has worked hard and, like me, he has had to wait for his chance. I am pleased for him that he scored on Saturday and it shows the strength in depth we have got in this squad.

"For him to come on and get a goal stakes his claim as well. He is laid back and is a gentle giant but he works hard and has a great strike on him.

"He is still only young, younger than me, and he wants to play football. We have good, healthy competition here at the club."

Flooding brings chaos to Leicestershire

Rain brought chaos yesterday as homes, roads and a railway station car park were flooded.

Residents of Market Harborough and Loughborough suffered the worst as more than an inch of rain fell during the day.

Fourteen homes were flooded in Market Harborough and the station car park was under over a foot of water.

In Stockerston, near Uppingham, a couple had to be rescued from their car after they became stuck on a flooded road at 2.30pm.

Loughborough University students Liam Mumford and Rob Harris, who live in Robin Mews, in the town, had between two and three inches of water in their house.

Liam, 20, said: "The whole street was like a river and if it hadn't stopped when it did the water would have reached our plug sockets.

"Luckily, we don't have too much stuff downstairs."

Rob, 20, escaped out of the window of the house to rescue his car from the water flowing outside.

He said: "Our house was just a big puddle downstairs, with water creeping further and further along the corridor."

Neighbour Amy Wang, 23, said yesterday: "It's going to take the whole night to clean up – the carpets and the floor are bad."

The flooding caused a power cut at homes in Market Harborough.

Sharon Green, who lives in Glebe Road, said: "There was a torrent of beige water streaming down the road from the building site where they're building 150 houses.

"This was one of the reasons we all objected to the houses."

Neighbour Phil French said: "The water was all silty and brown and flowed straight under our suspended floors.

"It is flowing straight off the building site across the way and on to the road." The area flooded earlier this month.

A spokesman for developer Redrow has said it was working with the council to prevent flooding.

Flood alerts were issued by the Environment Agency for several watercourses including the River Soar and Rothley Brook.

Barry Holyland drove along a flooded road in Melton borough yesterday.

He said: "I struggled to get my car through on a road between Tilton and Loddington.

"It was hard to judge how deep it was but it was hard to get through.

"My car stopped with the force of the water. It's frightening. I thought I'd be stranded.

"The water was smashing into my windscreen."

Mercury weatherman Dave Mutton said: "We had more than an inch of rain yesterday and that's an exceptional amount.

"I measured 26mm yesterday and we've already had the average rainfall for November, with more than a week to go."

Leicester Tigers star Stankovich is banned

Leicester Tigers have received a blow with the news that prop Boris Stankovich has been banned from playing for three weeks. The decision came at a Rugby Union disciplinary hearing in Coventry last night. The 32-year-old was sent off for a high tackle on Darren Allinson during the LV= Cup game with London Irish last Sunday. He was also cited for "stamping or trampling" on the Exiles' prop Alex Corbisiero before his dismissal. Stankovich pleaded guilty to both counts and Judge Sean Enright suspended him from playing until December 12 - the week before Tigers travel to Treviso in round four of the Heineken Cup. The news means that Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill will be without his most senior prop for Sunday's Aviva Premiership clash at Wasps plus the clash with Bath, on December 1, and the home Heineken Cup game against Treviso the week after. Dan Cole, Martin Castrogiovanni and Marcos Ayerza are all away on international duty and Logovi'i Mulipola is battling a knee injury. As a result, the club have bought in former Tigers player Michael Holford on loan from Nottingham as cover.

Two masked men threatened a member of staff during a raid at a petrol station in Mountsorrel. The thieves entered the Budgens Garage in Granite Way, threatened the worker and then took alcohol, cigarettes and cash before leaving in a black Honda CRV and driving off towards the A6. The raid took place at about 3.50am on Tuesday and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward. If you drive a white van and normally take that route to or from work then please think back. Were you in the area that day? Did you see anything suspicious? If so please call police immediately. A company which supplies sweets to thousands of UK shops has been sold by its founding family in a multi-million pound deal.
Hancocks Group, of Loughborough, has been bought by its management and a private equity firm.
The group operates 18 cash and carry depots across the country and sells 5,000 different types of confectionery, including pick and mix sweets.
One of the depots is in Jubilee Drive, Loughborough, next to the company's head office and national distribution centre.
Managing director Mark Watson led the management buy-out from brothers Andrew and Adrian Hancock, whose father Ray founded the business in Shepshed in 1962.
Mr Watson, who has now become chief executive, said: "I am delighted to be leading such a strong company that has the prospect of becoming a much bigger player within confectionery wholesaling."
Following the deal, London-based H2 Equity Partners hold a majority stake, with the remainder of the business owned by Mr Watson, finance director Richard Garner and purchasing director Jonathan Summerley. The Hancocks have left the company.
Hancocks has around 25,000 customers, including the Vue cinema chain and Merlin Entertainments, owner of Alton Towers, Thorpe Park and Madame Tussaud. It also supplies independent stores.
The group made a pre-tax profit of £4.3 million from sales of £120 million in the year to December 31, 2011.
Andrew Hancock, the group's former chairman, said: "From a sweet shop in Shepshed, our family has grown the business to a group that serves many thousands of businesses.
"We now hand the baton on with pride, knowing that Hancocks can only go from strength to strength."

Motorists in Leicestershire rescued as flooding continues

Nine drivers have been rescued by firefighters in Leicestershire in seven separate incidents after their vehicles became stranded in flood waters. Today a man was rescued by firefighters using an inflatable sled after becoming marooned 100m into flood waters on Syston Road, Cossington.  Another man waded through a knee-deep flood to safety after his car became stuck in water which came up to the doors of his vehicle on Sileby Lane, Mountsorrel. Another vehicle became stranded in Braunstone Lane East, Leicester, which had to be closed by police. Fire service manager Neil Mayne, who specialises in water rescues, has urged the public to take care. He said: "Owing to the large amount of rain we are experiencing locally we recommend that members of the public carefully plan any journeys. "Use maps to avoid any ford crossings or areas you know are prone to flooding. "Two feet of moving water is enough to move a car or a 4x4 vehicle. Do not attempt to drive or walk through water of an unknown depth because you won't know it's too deep until it's too late. "Anyone who finds a road that is flooded with no warning signs should telephone Leicestershire County Council on 0116 305 0001 to pass on details. At least one car was damaged when a tree came down across a main road in the middle of the evening rush hour today.
The incident happened on the A6 in Kibworth shortly after 5pm.
A car was badly damaged. Ambulances were seen rushing to the scene, but it is not known if anyone was injured.
Businessman Zuffar Haq, of Oadby, was driving to Market Harborough when he came across the tree.
He said: "I was heading to Market Harborough when I saw a huge tree which had fallen across one side of the A6, near the Kibworth shooting ground.
"It completely blocked the city-bound side of the road. I don't know if there was anyone in the car, but it looked pretty mashed up."
Peter Fearon, assistant head teacher at Kibworth High School, who was driving home to Market Harborough, said: "It must have happened shortly before I reached that section of the road.
"It looked like a couple of vehicles were involved and as I was driving away towards Harborough, an ambulance went past me in the opposite direction."
A police spokesman said: "We had a report at 4.45am of a tree coming down and a car being in collision with it.
"It is not a major incident and it is one of many we are dealing with.
"There are loads of calls about trees coming down with the wind as it is."

Make sure you're not a robbery victim

Police have launched a campaign to educate young people on how to avoid being robbed.

Young people are the victims in about 50 per cent of robberies committed in Leicester, officers said yesterday.

Leaflets and posters highlighting the police's personal safety message are being sent to colleges and the city's two universities.

Detective Inspector Alex Hathaway said: "Although robberies in Leicester have nearly halved in the past nine years, there are times where we can see a rise in the incidents reported to us.

"When new technology is released and just after Christmas are two examples.

"Thieves know what to look out for and know how to distract potential victims, such as asking them for the time and then snatching their mobile phones.

"Phones, cash and jewellery are at the top of the list of things to take. This is why it is always important to think about your personal safety. If you want to keep it safe, keep it out of sight. It really is that simple."

The number of robberies reported to city police has fallen by 28 per cent – or 112 victims – in the past year.

Police advice includes:

When carrying a bag, keep it close to your body, with the strap over your shoulder.

Spread your valuables around – for example, your mobile phone in your bag and money in your jacket.

If someone attempts to grab your bag, let them take it, rather than risk injury.

Keep your valuables, such as mobile phones and mp3 players, out of sight.

Try to stay in a group or, if alone, stick to well-lit routes.

Register valuables free at the address below as this can help police return stolen goods to their owners.

A boy who suffered head injuries after being hit by a car has been discharged from hospital.

Josh Robinson, 15, was involved in an accident on the way to school in Syston last Friday.

The teenager, from Thurmaston – a year 11 pupil at Wreake Valley Academy – was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, then transferred to the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.

Head teacher Tony Pinnock said: "It is fantastic news to hear Josh is back home.

"Everyone at school has been worried about him and we are all delighted he is back with his family."

Mr Pinnock said schoolmates had raised £200 to buy Josh a new jacket.

He said: "The three or four friends who witnessed the accident knew Josh's new jacket was ruined.

"Out of school time, they got together and raised the money. I think they are going to get a new jacket and might have a bit of change for some computer games.

"It is a lovely gesture and shows how highly-regarded Josh is. The year 11s are a great bunch and this is typical of them."

Josh was hit by the car at 8.47am on Friday, near the junction of St Peters Street and Melton Road.

Tesco security guards stole £20,000 of stock

Two security guards have been jailed for a scam involving the sale of thousands of pounds worth of goods stolen from the Tesco store where they worked.

John Costello (35), described at Leicester Crown Court as a "major player" who flagrantly helped himself to £20,000 worth of electrical goods and computer games, was jailed for two years. Much of the stock was sold on eBay by his then partner, Emma Sexton, from their home in Liberty Road, Braunstone Frith, Leicester.

Karl Davies, who was cleared of theft by a jury, admitted selling £32,000 worth of valuables on eBay, after they were stolen by a prolific shoplifter. Many of the items came from the same Tesco store, in Beaumont Leys.

Davies (36), of Aikman Avenue, New Parks, was jailed for 12 months, and also faces having £23,000 confiscated from his bank account.

A third security guard, Vijay Gohel, initially turned a blind eye, but ended up helping Costello to remove a trolley full of items from the store.

Jonathan Cox, prosecuting, said an investigation arose following significant losses at the store between January and December 2010.

"During that time, Costello, Davies and Gohel were employed there as security guards," Mr Cox told the court.

"The store's total losses were nearly half a million pounds, a three-fold increase on losses from the previous year and also the year afterwards.

"It was mainly Costello taking stock – utterly contradictory to what he was supposed to be doing."

Gohel blew the whistle on the scam on December 11, 2010, when he turned his manager's attention to the baby changing area of the store – where items were concealed behind the false ceiling.

Gohel claimed he had not reported the scam earlier as he was afraid, after Costello showed him a photo of a shotgun on his mobile phone.

Police searching for the stolen goods found a gun under Costello's bed.

Costello was jailed for two years in June 2011, for illegally possessing the weapon and ammunition.

He admitted theft of Tesco stock and converting criminal property, but sentencing for those offences was delayed until yesterday, for Davies' trial to take place.

Costello disputes showing a picture of a gun to Gohel or threatening him to keep quiet.

Mr Cox told the court that Gohel was less involved.

Gohel (38), of Goodwood Road, Leicester, admitted theft of goods relating to one trolley.

He was given a 10-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, and 250 hours of unpaid work.

Sexton (31), a mother-of-two, admitted converting criminal property. She was given a 10- month jail sentence, suspended for two years, with 150 hours of unpaid work, and faces having £9,834 confiscated from her bank account.

Sexton married Costello in February 2011, but they are now divorcing.

She told police Costello told her to sell the goods.

A man was taken to hospital after a bus carrying six passengers was involved in a collision with a van.

The accident happened at the junction of Hastings Road and Tailby Avenue, in Northfields, Leicester, shortly before 1.30pm yesterday.

One man – thought to be a passenger on the single-decker Arriva bus – was taken to hospital. Details of his condition have not been released.

A woman, also believed to be a passenger, was assessed at the scene by paramedics.

The collision involved a number 58 Hamilton bus and a FedEx parcel delivery van.

Two fire crews from the Leicester's Eastern fire station, in nearby Hastings Road, attended the incident.

Police closed Hastings Road at its junction with Overton Road while they dealt with the incident.

A spokesman for Arriva said: "A bus on the 58 service outbound was involved.

"By the time local management had arrived, four of the six passengers had made their way to their destinations.

"Two were at the scene being checked over by the emergency services. There were no injuries reported to the driver.

"We are working with the emergency services to ascertain the cause of the incident."

Two masked robbers threatened a member of staff at a petrol station before escaping with cash, alcohol and cigarettes.

The shop, on the site of the Budgens supermarket in Granite Way, Mountsorrel, was targeted at 3.50am on Tuesday.

Two men, both wearing balaclavas, left in a black Honda CRV and drove off in the direction of the nearby A6.

Police have urged anyone who saw the car speeding away from the scene or who has information about the robbery to contact them urgently.

Guy Coombs, the store's general manager, said: "The member of staff was threatened but fortunately he wasn't hurt.

"He was quite shaken but he is back at work. We're all doing what we can to make sure he's okay.

"The men who did this knew exactly what they were doing and what they wanted to achieve by it.

"Although it happened early in the morning, this is a busy area and there would have been someone who saw something suspicious.

"We want them to talk to the police if they know anything about the men who did this.

"These men need to be caught before they do this to someone else."

Councillor Stan Coats, a member of Mountsorrel Parish Council, said: "This is a very peaceful village and crime is low, so it was shocking to hear that the petrol station had been robbed.

"It is very near to the A6, so it is easily accessible, so the men who did this could be from anywhere.

"It is good to hear that the member of staff was not hurt in any way and, hopefully, the police will catch the two men very soon."

Detective Constable Dave Rock said: "Thankfully, the member of staff was not hurt, but they were shaken by the threats made by the two men.

"At the time of the incident, the victim waved to the driver of a white van that was passing.

"We are appealing to that driver to come forward. If you drive a white van and normally take that route to or from work, please think back. Were you in the area that day? Did you see anything suspicious?

Ban has taken living away from me, says snooker star

Leicester snooker star Joe Jogia is giving lessons to make a living after being banned from the sport.

The former world number 47 is acting as a tutor to private customers after receiving a two-year playing ban for breaching betting rules.

The 37-year-old player had been appealing the ban, imposed by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) in July, but withdrew his appeal this week.

Joe said: "I intended to go through with the appeal but my solicitor wanted the money up front and I could not afford it. I feel as if I have been treated badly by the WPBSA over the matter. This ban is effectively taking my living away from me.

"All I can do now is give people a few snooker lessons in Leicester. I am available for hire and am doing what I can to pay the bills."

The WPBSA launched an inquiry into suspicious betting patterns on Mr Jogia's match with Matthew Selt, which was due to take place at the Sky Snooker Shootout in Blackpool on Saturday, January 28.

The investigation centred on a series of bets which were placed on Selt to win. The pattern of betting was deemed to be suspicious and, as a result, betting was suspended on the match on the evening of January 23. Mr Jogia then withdrew from the match, citing an injury.

The investigation found that between January 20 and 24, a total of 19 bets were made or attempted, all at different betting shops in the Leicester area, on Selt to win.

Fourteen bets, with a total value of £4,830 were placed. Four bets totalling £2,300 and one bet of an unknown amount were declined.

The WPBSA said it was established that the two people placing the bets were known to Mr Jogia, and that telephone records demonstrated that in the period leading up to, and following, the placing of bets, the player was in repeated contact with them.

The WPBSA said Mr Jogia had failed to provide a consistent or detailed explanation as to the reason for the contact.

Although there was no evidence to show Mr Jogia would have gained financially, the disciplinary committee found the frequency and timing of the contact, his lack of a consistent explanation for the contact and the suspicions raised by the pattern of bets placed by his associates, created "an actual or apparent conflict of interest" for him as a member of the WPBSA, or otherwise risked impairing public confidence in the integrity of the Selt match.

Joe has been banned until 2014, and ordered to pay £2,000 as a contribution towards the cost of the hearing and investigation.

WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson said: "It is disappointing Joe chose to go down the route of an appeal that, in the view of our legal advisers, had no substance to it. This has forced the WPBSA to bear significant legal costs in preparation for the appeal."

However, Leicester snooker legend Willie Thorne defended Mr Jogia. He said: "I really feel for Joe. He is not a cheat. I hope he finds enough work out there to keep him going."

Police probe after player 'racially abused' during Barwell AFC and AFC Totton match

Police have launched an investigation after a player was allegedly racially abused during a non-league football game.

Hampshire officers are making inquiries into allegedly abusive comments made by a member of the crowd to a player from Barwell AFC during their match against AFC Totton on Saturday.

The target of the alleged abuse was Amro Khanid, Barwell's reserve goalkeeper.

The Mercury has been told a fan, believed to be an AFC Totton supporter, was ejected from the Testwood Stadium after using foul and allegedly abusive language towards the 22-year-old player in the dugout.

The incident, which saw the men square up to each other, happened towards the end of the Southern League Premier Division clash, which saw two players sent off as Barwell lost 2-1.

Barwell club secretary Shirley Brown said: "I did not see anything, but heard about it after the game. Amro was very upset about it."

Barwell press officer Merv Nash said he had also been told of the alleged abuse after the game.

He said: "I did not see anything at the time but was told about it in the clubhouse after the game."

A spokesman for Hampshire police said: "The matter is under investigation following an allegation made by Barwell AFC.

"The player involved has not made a complaint, but the nature of the alleged offence is such that we would investigate.

"Any form of racial abuse is a serious matter and we are treating this alleged incident in that manner.

"We would appeal to anyone who thinks they saw or heard anything in relation to this incident to contact us."

AFC Totton chairman Paul Wallace issued an apology to Barwell.

Mr Wallace said: "The executive committee of AFC Totton are currently conducting an in-depth internal investigation into the alleged incident, and until such times as the full facts have been established and proven, we cannot comment further on the matter.

"However, we shall co-operate and respond fully to any police inquiries, and would state that AFC Totton do not, and will not, condone any form of abuse or misbehaviour at the Testwood Stadium, whether by its own, or visiting supporters.

"We are deeply sorry that such an incident is alleged to have occurred and, on behalf of the club, offer our sincere apologies to Barwell FC, and to Amro Khanid, in particular."

Leicester trio who murdered takeaway owner Dogan Dogan must serve at least 28 years

Three men who robbed and murdered "a well-liked and hard-working" businessman were yesterday jailed for life.

Wali Khan, Naveed Naveed and Sarwar Gader were told they would spend a minimum of 28 years in prison for killing Dogan Dogan.

The 50-year-old was found dead in the flat above his takeaway, Aladdin's, in Linden Street, off Evington Road, Leicester, on January 8.

Mr Dogan had suffocated while the three men searched his bedsit.

Judge Henry Globe QC said Mr Dogan suffered severe mental and physical pain amounting to "extreme torture" as he struggled for breath.

The judge said: "When he stopped struggling you could have done something to save his life by loosening the bindings around his head – you did nothing."

Khan (32) and Naveed (28) both of St Stephen's Road, Highfields, in the city, and Gader (35), of Gleneagles Avenue, Rushey Mead, Leicester, were found guilty of murder on Thursday, following a four-week trial. Naveed and Gader were also found guilty of robbery, while Khan had admitted robbery at an earlier hearing.

During yesterday's sentencing hearing at Birmingham Crown Court, Judge Globe said the plan to rob Mr Dogan came from Khan, who had befriended a member of staff at Aladdin's restaurant and learned that Mr Dogan collected the takings from his other shop in Lutterworth before retiring to bed.

The judge said Gader, who was larger than the other two, and had a propensity from his record for this kind of crime, went along to ensure that Mr Dogan could be subdued.

Judge Globe said he would make no distinction between the three defendants when it came to sentencing.

He said: "Mr Dogan was a well-liked, respected, meticulous, hard-working family man whose death has caused devastation and untold pain and suffering."

He praised the family who attended each day of the trial for their dignity. He also commended the "highest standard of professionalism" of the investigating officers in the case.
