A man was taken to hospital after cutting himself repeatedly with a knife in a busy street. Police and paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to hospital. A Leicestershire Police spokeswoman said: "The man was threatening to harm himself so there was a concern for his welfare. "He did not threaten or harm anyone else and was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary for treatment for cuts."

Leicestershire batsmen face daunting last-day challenge against Worcestershire

Leicestershire were facing a huge run chase in the fourth innings of their LV County Championship match against Worcestershire at Grace Road. The visitors began the penultimate day on 76-1, a lead of just 35 at that point, but centuries from Daryl Mitchell and Tom Fell helped them to reach an imposing 444-8 before declaring, setting the County 404 to win. It was Mitchell's fourth ton of the season but a maiden first-class century for Fell, who was missed at slip by Dan Redfern off Richard Jones when he had made just 29. Nathan Buck finished with 5-123 but Leicestershire's third-day bowling - particularly in the morning session - was distinctly below par and allowed the visitors to take a grip on matters. Worcestershire's declaration left County openers Greg Smith and Angus Robson with eight overs to face at the end of the day and they coped well with a potentially hazardous challenge, Leicestershire closing on 20-0.

Crime levels low at this year's Download festival, say police

Police say crime at last week's Download rock festival is expected to be lower than last year. Tens of thousands of fans travelled to Donington Park, with up to 35,000 camping on the site, to see acts including Aerosmith, The Offspring and Linkin Park. Police officers and officials from North West Leicestershire District Council worked with the festival organiser's private security to help visitors stay safe and reduce the risk of becoming victims of crime. During last year's festival, police recorded 294 crimes, overwhelmingly thefts from tents, people and cars. Police expect crime levels at this year's event, which took place at the weekend, to be lower than last year. The final tally of offences is still being worked out. Inspector Johnny Monks, who was in charge of the force's crime prevention operation, said: "It's been a really good event with a great atmosphere and low levels of crime reported to us. "The success of our operation lies in our great working relationship with the organisers, Live Nation. "The festival passed off without major incident and although it is too soon to give definite crime figures, early indications are that crime is down significantly. "Officers worked hard day and night patrolling car parks and campsites and they talked to hundreds of rock fans, swapping hats, giving 'high fives' and having their picture taken. "We used Facebook and Twitter to give out crime prevention advice before the event and we've had an overwhelmingly positive response from fans thanking us for our friendly policing style. "It has been a great success from a police prospective and planning has already begun for next year." "I'd also like to thank local people living in Castle Donington, as there is no doubt an event this size does have an impact on their village particularly in terms of traffic." John Probyn, chief operating officer at Live Nation, said; "We want our customers to come and enjoy every aspect of Download Festival. "A positive approach to crime prevention and close working relationship with Leicestershire Police enables us to maintain a high level of safety and security for our customers and their possessions."

World Cup 2014: Robbie Savage pokes fun at himself with Brazil star Roberto Carlos

Former Leicester City star and BBC World Cup pundit Robbie Savage is proving to be a real joker. The 39-year-old has poked fun at himself again after being the butt of the joke when a picture on Twitter compared his single trophy with those of fellow Brazil 2014 pundits Clarence Seedorf and Thierry Henry. The former Welsh international's solitary Worthington Cup win with the Foxes looks a poor return when put next to the national, international and world trophies won by the Dutchman and Frenchman. Now Robbie has tweeted a picture of himself with former Brazilian star Roberto Carlos and posted: "Ahhhh did he win the Worthington Cup ?" Carlos, 41, won the World Cup with Brazil and two Champions League cup finals and four league titles with Real Madrid. Former England and City legend and World Cup presenter Gary Lineker retweeted the picture saying: "Nah. Not in your league!" Gary was one of thousands of people who retweeted the original Seedorf/Henry Twitter picture – initially posted by someone called @beardedgenius. Robbie saw the funny side about the tweet that was posted after he was a pundit during the France v Honduras game on Sunday. He said: "I thought it was quite funny that a picture was posted of me, Seedorf and Henry listing how many trophies they had won. "There was a few, more than a few and my own Worthington Cup, which to be fair made me laugh." Robbie also leaped to the defence of fellow World Cup pundit Phil Neville who has been criticised for his co-commentary skills during England's game against Italy. The BBC has received hundreds of complaints about the former England and Manchester United player's performance during Saturday's match. Some said he was "monotone", others said he was "boring". It has emerged that a radiator salesman called Phil Neville has received hundreds of abusive tweets intended for his footballing namesake. Mr Neville, from Suffolk, was bombarded with Twitter messages to his account @philneville by fans who were unhappy with the ex-England star's commentary. The former referee, who was a fourth official during some Premier League games in the 1990s, said he was used to insults from football fans, but could not believe the content of some of the messages. He said: "Some were very abusive. One person said 'I hope you die'. "Working in the sales industry, my name has been a benefit - people do remember me. "With Twitter there are some real positives, but there are downsides - particularly if you're famous. "Some comments were comical and I've seen the funny side, but there are some sad people out there." Mr Neville said he would not be contacting the police over the messages, but had tweeted the former footballer to wish him good luck. The BBC confirmed it had received 445 complaints about Phil Neville's commentary on Saturday but added he would continue to play a key role throughout the tournament.

Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater has signed a new four-year contract. The 24-year-old put pen to paper this afternoon at City's Belvoir Drive training ground and spoke of his delight at committing his immediate future to the club. "I am delighted to sign the new contract," he told the Mercury. "It was a step I have wanted to take for a while now and I am glad it is finally done. "I can get my head down now and concentrate on the season. "It settles me again and I will be able to concentrate on my training and get back playing. Hopefully, I can keep showing everyone what I am made of. "I didn't need much persuading. It was a good season for me personally. I was in a pretty strong position and I am sure the club knew that, and the club was in a great position so it was just right that we both were able to come to an agreement and I could sign." Drinkwater was named City's player of the year last season after an impressive campaign which saw him make 43 starts, scoring seven times, including the club's goal of the season against Watford at the King Power Stadium in February. Drinkwater was also named in the Championship team of the year alongside City team-mates Kasper Schmeichel, who has also signed a new four-year contract, and captain Wes Morgan, who is close to agreeing a contract extension.

Danny Drinkwater has signed a new four-year contract with Leicester City and urged his team-mates to follow suit.

Drinkwater was one of a number of City players about to enter the final year of their current contracts.

The midfielder said he was delighted to be the first to commit his future to the club because he feels City share his own ambitions.

Captain Wes Morgan is also close to signing a contract extension and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has already committed his future to the club, signing a four-year deal.

Top scorer David Nugent's contract is set to run out but he remains in negotiations over a new contract, with reports that Burnley and Middlesbrough are ready to make him offers.

Matty James, Andy King, Jamie Vardy, Jeff Schlupp, Liam Moore and Ritchie De Laet are in talks over extending their City deals.

Drinkwater hopes City's title-winning squad can remain together and cement their place in the Premier League.

"I am delighted to sign the new contract," said Drinkwater, who was City's player of the year last season.

"It was a step I have wanted to take for a while now and I am glad it is finally done.

"I can get my head down now and concentrate on the season.

"It settles me again and I will be able to concentrate on my training and get back playing.

"Hopefully, I can keep showing everyone what I am made of. I didn't need much persuading. It was a good season for me personally.

"I was in a pretty strong position and I am sure the club knew that, and the club was in a great position so it was just right that we were both able to come to an agreement and I could sign.

"This squad is close-knit and the manager has made sure of that. If he can keep that with the additions, then I am sure it will pay dividends."

Drinkwater joined City from Manchester United in January 2012 in a £1million deal and, after a period where he struggled with consistency, he played a key role in last season's title success.

He made 43 starts and two substitute appearances in the league and scored seven goals, including the winner of goal of the season against Watford.

Leicester woman stabbed sister in rage over 'affair' with ex-boyfriend

A woman who suspected her sister had slept with her ex-partner exacted her revenge by beating her with a rolling pin – and then stabbing her.

Carla Monteiro (36) repeatedly threatened to kill her 24-year-old sister during the attack, early on December 14.

During the violence, Monteiro's ex-partner, with whom she has three children, broke into the victim's city centre flat to stop the incident, Leicester Crown Court was told.

The injured woman went to hospital with a 4cm deep stab wound – inflicted with a serrated-edged bread knife which Monteiro had taken with her.

The victim also had superficial cuts to her knuckles and wrist, a scratched arm and a bruised and sore head.

Monteiro apologised three weeks later and the sisters have now made up.

Monteiro, of New Parks Boulevard, Glenfield, admitted unlawful wounding.

She was given an 18-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, with 100 hours of unpaid work and a requirement to attend a programme at Leicester's Just Women centre.

Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Dean QC said: "You used considerable violence, including with a knife, to injure your sister. You were overwhelmed by emotion and a sense of betrayal, as a consequence of what you believed was a relationship between your sister and your former partner – and that's why you decided to do what you did.

"You've now made your peace with your sister and she did not want to pursue the case.

"I'm taking an exceptional course because of your remorse, your recognition of what you did, the fact you've never been in trouble before and no lasting damage was done – and particularly because of your sister's attitude to what happened."

He told Monteiro, who wept in the dock: "You must understand how very close you've come to losing your liberty."

The court heard Monteiro banged on the door at her sister's flat at Elizabeth House, London Road, Leicester, at 3am and was let in.

Victoria Rose, prosecuting, said: "The defendant became aggressive, saying she was going to kill her. She took out a rolling pin and hit her.

"The defendant's ex-boyfriend, who lives in the block, arrived shouting 'what's going on?' and forced his way in.

"The complainant felt dizzy and tried to run out but the defendant grabbed her.

"She saw a knife coming at her and felt it go into the right side of her hip, also cutting just below her hand and wrist area.

"The defendant repeatedly said she would kill her as she'd slept with her ex-boyfriend.

"He managed to get the knife and the sister went to the flats' security office for help."

James Varley, mitigating, said Monteiro was "anguished" in the way she thought her trust was betrayed by her sister.

He said it was against a background of a long-suffering relationship with her ex-partner, with whom she has three children aged between four and 13.

Leicester's 'Blue Tower' to get a new, more sophisticated paint job

This is the first glimpse of what Leicester's Blue Tower will look like following a long-awaited paint job.

The artist's impression, right, shows the 22-storey landmark building after being repainted a darker shade of blue.

Middlesex-based investors James Boyle and Steven Gardner vowed to tone down the building when they bought it from the Irish government in a £6.5 million deal earlier this year.

The controversial current electric blue paint job was carried out seven years ago by a previous owner.

Mr Boyle said the repainting project, together with repair work on the outside concrete, would cost more than £100,000 and be completed by September. Initial repair work is already underway.

"It's basically going to be painted dark blue," he said. "We had a palette of different colours. However, we think a dark blue is attractive because it's a more professional and serious look. It doesn't offend anyone."

Teaching company Study Group has signed a 25-year lease to occupy a large part of the 269ft building for teaching and student accommodation, while the owners are also looking to attract other potential users to the St George's Way site.

The site is also home to a 135-room Premier Inn.

Coloured window panels, combined with the electric blue paint, led to the tower being dubbed the "Connect 4 Building", after the colourful puzzle game.

Those panels will now be replaced.

The Mercury asked businesses close to the tower for their views on the artist's impression.

Amir Mossad, owner of Grosseto Pizzeria, on the corner of Granby Street and East Street, said: "It looks better. If it makes the area look smarter, it's good for business."

Zuber Omari, owner of Bling Phones and Accessories, in Granby Street, said: "I think it looks a bit dull. It doesn't stand out as much as it does at the moment.

"We are already in a dull area. We need to brighten the place up. This is the gateway to Leicester."

Himmat Jogia, owner of Universal Time, also in Granby Street, said: "It's better, but I'd like to see a different colour because it's too similar to what it is now. I would like to see it painted cream. It's been blue for so many years."

City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "I welcome what they are doing to try to make it look a more sophisticated colour.

"I'm very much hoping the finished effect will be a credit to them and the city.

"People objected to the fact the previous owners chose a particularly vivid blue and badly painted it – it was so blotchy."

The deal with Study Group will see the top 10 floors of the converted into 165 rooms for overseas undergraduates, with other floors providing space for classes.

Mr Boyle also said Premier Inn, which has its hotel in the bottom half of the tower, was interested in expanding.

The complex also contains a shisha cafe and 24 flats.

The building was last painted in 2007 when it was owned by Magnet Property Investments. The tower was repossessed by the Anglo Irish Bank in 2009, before it was taken over by the Irish government after suffering financial problems.

Leicester City have been handed a baptism of fire on their return to the Premier League. Nigel Pearson's men face a challenging opening to their first season back in the top flight for a decade. They kick off at home to Everton on Saturday, August 16 before heading to Chelsea on Saturday, August 23. Arsenal then visit the King Power Stadium on August 30 before City head to Stoke's Britannia Stadium, a notoriously difficult ground for visiting teams, on September 13. There is no let-up for City as they then entertain Manchester United on September 20 to cap a difficult first five fixtures. There is some good news for City as their final six fixtures seem a little more kind, should they be battling for points for survival at the end of the campaign. Four of the last six are at home, to Swansea, Newcastle, Southampton and QPR on the final day of the season. The two away games in between are at Burnley and Sunderland. There are some attractive fixtures for City fans during the festive period. City entertain Tottenham on Boxing Day and head to Anfield to take on Liverpool on New Year's Day, with a trip to FA Cup finalists Hull on December 28. In terms of Midlands derbies, City entertain West Brom on November 1 with the return game at the Hawthorns on April 11. City head to Villa Park on December 6, and Villa come to Leicester on January 10, while Stoke head to the King Power Stadium a week later. All fixtures are subject to change when broadcasters choose their live games.

POLL: Should England drop Rooney for the Uruguay game?

England face Uruguay tomorrow in their second Group D game of the World Cup finals - but the question everyone is asking is should Wayne Rooney start. The Manchester United forward received a lot of criticism for his performance against Italy on Saturday. But 27-year-old Rooney was played out of position on the left, rather than his preferred role up-front - where he has scored more goals in competitive international games than any other England player. Speculation about whether England manager Roy Hodgson should drop the striker followed the team's 2-1 defeat to the Italians. But the boss has not given any indication about what his line-up will be tomorrow. Rooney became England's all-time top goalscorer in competitive internationals when he scored his 27th competitive goal in a 4–1 World Cup qualifier against Montenegro - passing Michael Owen's total of 26. Leicester lad Gary Lineker is third in the rankings with 22. England play Uruguay at the Arena Corinthians, in Sao Paulo, at 8pm (GMT), tomorrow. Since Leicester City clinched promotion back to the Premier League and then went on to lift the Championship title it has all been a beautiful dream for City fans. When the fixtures landed this morning that dream will have felt very real. On the face of it City couldn't have asked for a tougher start to their first season back in the top flight for a decade. Everton (fifth last season), Chelsea (third), Arsenal (fourth) and Manchester United, who will surely do better than seventh this season under Louis van Gaal, present stiff opposition in City's opening five games. But while they are tough fixtures, they are also exciting ones. Facing these titans of English football is what all the struggle has been about for the past ten years. These were the games City fans were dreaming of, especially during the misery of relegation to League One. I bet at their lowest City fans didn't hark back to their Premier League days and think about playing Hull City, Crystal Palace and Burnley, no disrespect to them. Of course, very little will be expected from City in those games. It will be the clashes against the sides mentioned above, plus West Bromwich Albion, West Ham United, Sunderland, Aston Villa, Swansea City, Burnley and Queens Park Rangers which will define City's season. The aim of the game is staying in that top flight and while any points against the elite will be a bonus, the main challenge is being the best of the rest. With the momentum of last season, the vocal backing of a set of supporters who have been starved of top flight football for ten years and a young, hungry group of players full of confidence, it might just be the case that City won't be fearing the big boys, it will be Martinez, Mourinho, Wenger and van Gaal who will be weary of City!

Leicestershire fall to Worcestershire spin wizard Saeed Ajmal

Leicestershire were sent spinning to LV County Championship defeat by Worcestershire's Saeed Ajmal at Grace Road. Chasing a target of 404 the County resumed the final day on 20-0 but were shot out for 169 to lose by 234 runs. Boundaries flowed in the morning session but wickets also fell and at lunch Leicestershire were on 136-4 with their best hope batting out a draw. However, an inspired spell from Ajmal saw the County fall apart. The Pakistan Test star took six wickets in 36 balls for just 13 runs to bring the game to an end inside an hour of the afternoon session. Greg Smith and Angus Robson put on 50 for the opening partnership but that aside the only stand of any note was the 47 added by Niall O'Brien and Dan Redfern for the fifth-wicket. However, when O'Brien fell to Ajmal the floodgates opened with only Redfern offering any resistance as he made 39 from 64 balls.

Former Leicester City star and World Cup pundit Robbie Savage has told of his latest Brazilian adventure - a 12-hour journey ending with his driver's car being stolen. The 39-year-old former Foxes favourite has outlined how his tortuous journey to Sao Paulo began with his flight being diverted because of fog. Robbie was travelling south to Sao Paulo after commentating on the Ghana versus USA game in the North East of Brazil in Natal. He said he woke up on the flight to find out the plane had been circling for one and half hours and had to be diverted due to fog. After finally making a connecting flight and arriving in Sao Paulo Robbie said he was met by their driver called Jefferson. He said: "Jefferson comes to the airport to pick us up. "We've had a tough day by then really. We're shattered all of us. "We walk out to his car. All of a sudden he starts looking around. "I said Jefferson what are you doing? "He said: 'My car's gone.' His car's been robbed. "So we are there with our bags and we have been travelling for 12 hours. "We had to get a taxi and I missed the first 15 minutes of the Brazil game." Robbie has been entertaining fans with his commentary and his antics on Twitter where he saw the funny side of his lack of football trophies compared to fellow TV pundits Clarence Seedorf and Thierry Henry.

Rosemary Conley axes jobs as part of online relaunch

Diet and fitness guru Rosemary Conley is to relaunch an online version of her business following its collapse. Rosemary Conley Food and Fitness, along with the group's magazine publisher, Quorn House Publishing, went into administration in February after a sharp drop in trade. The 67-year-old businesswoman will now run the new company from her home in Ashby Folville, near Melton. However, she is not a shareholder in the new venture. The new business, Rosemary Conley Online - trading as rosemaryconley.com - is being financed by a group of unnamed investors who feel there will be demand for her expertise on the internet. The move has led to the group's nine remaining staff being made redundant, although three of them will be offered part-time roles in the new venture. The companies, which had been based in Quorn, employed 32 staff before the collapse. Ms Conley, who set up her business 21 years ago, said: "This will be a great way of reaching people all over the world. It will be cutting edge. "Our excitement is tinged with sadness as we are now losing the remaining staff based at our Leicestershire HQ. Many of them have been with me for many years. "This is the end of an era, but it's also a new beginning. I'm not ready retire yet and am looking forward to this." The firm's Quorn House head office, where it has been based for 21 years, will close. Under the deal, the new business has teamed up with Hampshire-based healthcare products firm Careline UK to create apps and websites to offer weight loss and fitness advice. Andrew Gardner, managing director of Careline UK, said: "We are thrilled to be working with Rosemary Conley. Online health and fitness is a key part of our vision. "This 25 years' experience in cutting edge technology combined with Rosemary's 42 years in the health and fitness industry will create a formidable partnership in the global health and fitness market." A deal has also been secured that will allow more than 100 franchisees, which operate fitness classes under the Rosemary Conley Fitness Classes brand, to continue. Joint administrator Mark Hopkins, of Elwell, Watchorn & Saxton, of Sileby, said the investors had bought the Rosemary Conley name and the associated "intellectual property". He declined to reveal how much they had paid, but said the money would go towards paying off the hundreds of thousands of pounds owed to creditors. Ms Conley appeared in last year's Leicestershire Rich List, published by the Leicester Mercury, with an estimated wealth of £4 million.
