Leicester City midfielder Danny Drinkwater signs four-year deal
Danny Drinkwater urges Leicester City team-mates to follow suit and sign new deal
Danny Drinkwater has signed a new four-year contract with Leicester City and urged his team-mates to follow suit.
Drinkwater was one of a number of City players about to enter the final year of their current contracts.
The midfielder said he was delighted to be the first to commit his future to the club because he feels City share his own ambitions.
Captain Wes Morgan is also close to signing a contract extension and goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has already committed his future to the club, signing a four-year deal.
Top scorer David Nugent's contract is set to run out but he remains in negotiations over a new contract, with reports that Burnley and Middlesbrough are ready to make him offers.
Matty James, Andy King, Jamie Vardy, Jeff Schlupp, Liam Moore and Ritchie De Laet are in talks over extending their City deals.
Drinkwater hopes City's title-winning squad can remain together and cement their place in the Premier League.
"I am delighted to sign the new contract," said Drinkwater, who was City's player of the year last season.
"It was a step I have wanted to take for a while now and I am glad it is finally done.
"I can get my head down now and concentrate on the season.
"It settles me again and I will be able to concentrate on my training and get back playing.
"Hopefully, I can keep showing everyone what I am made of. I didn't need much persuading. It was a good season for me personally.
"I was in a pretty strong position and I am sure the club knew that, and the club was in a great position so it was just right that we were both able to come to an agreement and I could sign.
"This squad is close-knit and the manager has made sure of that. If he can keep that with the additions, then I am sure it will pay dividends."
Drinkwater joined City from Manchester United in January 2012 in a £1million deal and, after a period where he struggled with consistency, he played a key role in last season's title success.
He made 43 starts and two substitute appearances in the league and scored seven goals, including the winner of goal of the season against Watford.
Leicester woman stabbed sister in rage over 'affair' with ex-boyfriend
A woman who suspected her sister had slept with her ex-partner exacted her revenge by beating her with a rolling pin – and then stabbing her.
Carla Monteiro (36) repeatedly threatened to kill her 24-year-old sister during the attack, early on December 14.
During the violence, Monteiro's ex-partner, with whom she has three children, broke into the victim's city centre flat to stop the incident, Leicester Crown Court was told.
The injured woman went to hospital with a 4cm deep stab wound – inflicted with a serrated-edged bread knife which Monteiro had taken with her.
The victim also had superficial cuts to her knuckles and wrist, a scratched arm and a bruised and sore head.
Monteiro apologised three weeks later and the sisters have now made up.
Monteiro, of New Parks Boulevard, Glenfield, admitted unlawful wounding.
She was given an 18-month jail sentence, suspended for two years, with 100 hours of unpaid work and a requirement to attend a programme at Leicester's Just Women centre.
Sentencing, Judge Nicholas Dean QC said: "You used considerable violence, including with a knife, to injure your sister. You were overwhelmed by emotion and a sense of betrayal, as a consequence of what you believed was a relationship between your sister and your former partner – and that's why you decided to do what you did.
"You've now made your peace with your sister and she did not want to pursue the case.
"I'm taking an exceptional course because of your remorse, your recognition of what you did, the fact you've never been in trouble before and no lasting damage was done – and particularly because of your sister's attitude to what happened."
He told Monteiro, who wept in the dock: "You must understand how very close you've come to losing your liberty."
The court heard Monteiro banged on the door at her sister's flat at Elizabeth House, London Road, Leicester, at 3am and was let in.
Victoria Rose, prosecuting, said: "The defendant became aggressive, saying she was going to kill her. She took out a rolling pin and hit her.
"The defendant's ex-boyfriend, who lives in the block, arrived shouting 'what's going on?' and forced his way in.
"The complainant felt dizzy and tried to run out but the defendant grabbed her.
"She saw a knife coming at her and felt it go into the right side of her hip, also cutting just below her hand and wrist area.
"The defendant repeatedly said she would kill her as she'd slept with her ex-boyfriend.
"He managed to get the knife and the sister went to the flats' security office for help."
James Varley, mitigating, said Monteiro was "anguished" in the way she thought her trust was betrayed by her sister.
He said it was against a background of a long-suffering relationship with her ex-partner, with whom she has three children aged between four and 13.
Leicester's 'Blue Tower' to get a new, more sophisticated paint job
This is the first glimpse of what Leicester's Blue Tower will look like following a long-awaited paint job.
The artist's impression, right, shows the 22-storey landmark building after being repainted a darker shade of blue.
Middlesex-based investors James Boyle and Steven Gardner vowed to tone down the building when they bought it from the Irish government in a £6.5 million deal earlier this year.
The controversial current electric blue paint job was carried out seven years ago by a previous owner.
Mr Boyle said the repainting project, together with repair work on the outside concrete, would cost more than £100,000 and be completed by September. Initial repair work is already underway.
"It's basically going to be painted dark blue," he said. "We had a palette of different colours. However, we think a dark blue is attractive because it's a more professional and serious look. It doesn't offend anyone."
Teaching company Study Group has signed a 25-year lease to occupy a large part of the 269ft building for teaching and student accommodation, while the owners are also looking to attract other potential users to the St George's Way site.
The site is also home to a 135-room Premier Inn.
Coloured window panels, combined with the electric blue paint, led to the tower being dubbed the "Connect 4 Building", after the colourful puzzle game.
Those panels will now be replaced.
The Mercury asked businesses close to the tower for their views on the artist's impression.
Amir Mossad, owner of Grosseto Pizzeria, on the corner of Granby Street and East Street, said: "It looks better. If it makes the area look smarter, it's good for business."
Zuber Omari, owner of Bling Phones and Accessories, in Granby Street, said: "I think it looks a bit dull. It doesn't stand out as much as it does at the moment.
"We are already in a dull area. We need to brighten the place up. This is the gateway to Leicester."
Himmat Jogia, owner of Universal Time, also in Granby Street, said: "It's better, but I'd like to see a different colour because it's too similar to what it is now. I would like to see it painted cream. It's been blue for so many years."
City mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said: "I welcome what they are doing to try to make it look a more sophisticated colour.
"I'm very much hoping the finished effect will be a credit to them and the city.
"People objected to the fact the previous owners chose a particularly vivid blue and badly painted it – it was so blotchy."
The deal with Study Group will see the top 10 floors of the converted into 165 rooms for overseas undergraduates, with other floors providing space for classes.
Mr Boyle also said Premier Inn, which has its hotel in the bottom half of the tower, was interested in expanding.
The complex also contains a shisha cafe and 24 flats.
The building was last painted in 2007 when it was owned by Magnet Property Investments. The tower was repossessed by the Anglo Irish Bank in 2009, before it was taken over by the Irish government after suffering financial problems.
