Leicester Tigers centre Manu Tuilagi will return to the England starting line-up to face France at Twickenham on Saturday.

Tuilagi came on as a replacement in England's 12-6 victory against Ireland after missing the Scotland game with an ankle injury.

He is one of four Tigers names in head coach Stuart Lancaster's starting line-up, alongside Ben Youngs, Dan Cole and Geoff Parling.

With Northampton Saints' Dylan Hartley named as hooker, Tom Youngs drops to the bench with Tigers team-mates Toby Flood and Thomas Waldrom.

Lancaster said: "We thought long and hard about changing a winning team which did so well against Ireland.

"But we believe that Dylan, Courtney and Manu are ready for the opportunity and allow us to vary our play, while the bench will add impact and energy as the game unfolds in the second half.

"The players are really looking forward to getting back to Twickenham. The atmosphere in the stadium is fantastic and, hopefully, the crowd can get behind us in what is sure to be a great challenge against a motivated and physical French team."

England: Goode; Ashton, Tuilagi, Barritt, Brown; Farrell, B Youngs; Marler, Hartley, Cole, Launchbury, Parling, Lawes, Robshaw (capt), Wood. Reps: T Youngs, Wilson, Vunipola, Haskell, Waldrom, Care, Flood, Twelvetrees.

A young woman was seriously sexually assaulted in a block of student flats, police said today. The 19-year-old met a group of five men while she was out in Leicester city centre on the evening of Tuesday, February 5. Police said she visited a number of bars with the men and then went with them to a block of student flats in Eastern Boulevard. Officers said the woman did not live in the block. She was seriously sexually assaulted in the early hours of Wednesday, February 6, police said. Detectives have released CCTV footage of three men they are trying to trace in connection with the assault. Two men, both aged 20, have been arrested in connection with the incident and have been released on police bail pending further inquiries. Detective Sergeant Emma Matts said: "We are working closely with the victim to provide her with the level of support she needs and to help her piece together what happened. "We have managed to obtain this clear CCTV footage showing the victim with the five men and hope by releasing this it may generate further leads to their identity. "We know that the three men told the victim that they worked in the music industry. "This may be false but if it is indeed true it could help us in tracing them. "Do you know someone in this particular industry who was in Leicester at this time? "Take a good look at these images, do you recognise them and have details of who they are? "Any night in Leicester city centre can be busy but less busy during the week. "There is more chance of someone recalling seeing something if there are fewer people out so we would ask anyone who was also out having a drink to think back. "Did you see these men in a bar or making their way through the city? "I would urge you to come forward as you may remember details that seem insignificant to you, but are actually very important to the investigation. "Any information received will be treated in the strictest confidence." The first of the three men police wish to trace is black, approximately 5ft 6in and of muscular build. He has short black hair. The second man is white, of medium build and had facial stubble. The third man is Asian, approximately 5ft 7in and had short black hair. He was wearing glasses at some point through the evening. Leicester City's trip to play Championship leaders Cardiff has been moved to Tuesday, March 12 (kick-off 7.45pm).

The two clubs have agreed to move the fixture  from Tuesday, April 9, in order to ease fixture congestion for both sides.

The move follows Barnsley's progression in the FA Cup. which sees them face Manchester City on Saturday, March 9, the day the Tykes were set to travel to Cardiff in the Championship.

It will also allow City to avoid three hefty away trips in eight days, with trips to Barnsley (April 1) and Brighton (April 6) on the horizon.

This is the second City fixture to be changed this week, after the Birmingham game was moved to Friday, April 12, for television. The new move will also prevent City having to play two games in the space of four days.

Leicester City have signed Tottenham striker Harry Kane on loan until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old will go straight into the squad for tomorrow's trip to face Blackpool at Bloomfield Road.

Kane has made just one Premier League appearance for Spurs but has played in the Europa League for them this season, and has previously gained experience during loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall and Norwich.

He has been capped 14 times at under-19 level by England and has scored six goals.

Kane, who has come through the youth ranks at White Hart Lane, scored for Millwall as City suffered a 2-1 defeat at the New Den April, and made five appearances for the Canaries this season before being recalled by Spurs.

City manager Nigel Pearson said the teenager will strengthen his attacking options during the vital promotion run-in.

"Harry will hopefully bring more goals and fresh impetus," said Pearson. "It keeps the competition for places strong."

9 air cadets and 1 staff member of 1181 (Syston) Squadron, Air Training Corps, recently took up the challenge to join with other air cadets from across the country to show their support to Comic Relief 2013. After hearing that BBC Blue Peter daredevil presenter, Helen Skelton, was looking for support in a challenge for Comic Relief involving the world renowned Red Arrows, the cadets leapt at the chance to be a part of what was to be a spectacular day!

The group of air cadets from Syston, arrived at RAF College Cranwell early on Tuesday 12th February and, along with 400 other air cadets, waited to hear what their challenge was to be. Whilst they waited, the 400 air cadets and their staff were treated to performances from 1084 (Market Harborough) Squadron band resulting in some sing along songs and then to make sure everybody was full of energy there was some dancing, group challenges and mexican waves!

After getting full of energy, the staff and air cadets were welcomed by Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty, Commandant Air Cadets. She praised all the air cadets and staff, thanking them for their enthusiasm and showing such great support to the project to support Comic Relief. The crew from the BBC explained that Helen was taking part in 7 different challenges to inspire people across the country to do something to help raise money for Comic Relief. Helen's challenge was to fly with the Red Arrows and give the order to 'Smoke on', the order that tells the Red Arrows pilots to turn on their smoke that helps provide their iconic displays. The air cadets were going to be on the ground to form the letters RND that would be filmed from the air by the Red Arrows as they flew overhead.

After Helen had interviewed some of the young people, they all moved to outside College Hall Officers Mess at RAF College Cranwell to form the letters that would be filmed from the air. Despite the snow and very cold conditions outside, everybody cheered and displayed massive grins as they were treated to a display and flypast by the Red Arrows – with Helen flying in Red 1.

12 lucky cadets out of the 400 were selected to escort Helen into the aircraft and speak to her about their experiences as a part of the Air Cadet Organisation. Cadet Corporal George Sutton (aged 15), was one of the lucky 12. He said, "Another fantastic day! It was a great experience! Being chosen to represent 1181 in the guard of honour for Helen Skelton as she entered the tarmac to the aircraft was a huge privilege! Getting to meet the Red Arrows and represent the air cadets on TV was brilliant. Being involved in a video for Red Nose Day is rewarding in itself as it is helping many people, I would like to say a huge thank you to all the air cadet staff who give up their time for events like this and especially Pilot Officer McGlynn on behalf of all the squadron for organising our squadron so we could be involved!"

1181 Squadron meet on a Monday and Thursday from 19:00hrs to 21:30hrs and are based in the ATC hut in the grounds of Wreake Valley College. We are actively recruit new members and any interested parties should contact Flight Lieutenant Kenyon on oc.1181@aircadets.org

Leicester City Council cash to cut millions from spending as 'worse to come'

Leicester City Council has approved plans to cut millions of pounds from its spending in the next two years.

Mayor Sir Peter Soulsby said his authority's ability to provide services had been "seriously undermined by the harshest cuts in Government grants in living memory".

City councillors met on Wednesday to decide budget plans that will mean £3 million being cut from the council's £288 million running costs next year, followed by a further £6 million the year after.

Sir Peter said: "It's not just bad news for service users and those who provide those services, it's bad news for the Leicester economy.

"It is clear there is worse to come.

"We have sought to mitigate, where possible, the impact of these proposals."

As the Labour majority approved the budget – which is to see more than 100 council jobs scrapped next year – there were cries of shame from anti-cuts protesters in the council chamber's public gallery.

They had earlier gathered outside Leicester Town Hall to protest against the cuts and lobby members, particularly over proposed £2.2 million cuts to homelessness budgets and the scrapping of 200 hostel beds.

This proposal had already been taken off the agenda to allow the results of a recent consultation to be considered.

The campaigners, including Unison union members, accused Labour councillors of failing to stand up to cuts imposed by the Tory and Liberal Democrat Government.

At one point, about 50 chanting demonstrators in Town Hall Square pushed past council staff to get into the building foyer for a loud but peaceful protest.

They were removed from the building by about 15 police officers.

Inside the meeting, Labour councillors queued up to denounce the Government, calling it "wretched" and "uncaring".

Sole Liberal Democrat councillor Nigel Porter was involved in angry exchanges with Labour members who said his party was responsible for national policies affecting the city's most vulnerable.

Coun Porter accused Sir Peter and deputy city mayor Rory Palmer of accepting large pay packets while cutting services.

He said: "Most people think it's disgusting that Sir Peter and his number two are cashing in. Sir Peter's number two will have pocketed nearly £200,000 over the four years of this council.

"If they cared about the homeless, they would stop buying old post offices and empty factories.

"They would stop wasting money on a £4 million patio (Jubilee Square) so Sir Peter can have his bit of immortality."

Coun Porter was branded "a grotesque parody of an opposition councillor" by Labour assistant mayor Andy Connelly.

Sir Peter described Coun Porter's comments as silliness and Coun Palmer said the people of Leicester expected politics to be carried out with decency and decorum.

Sir Peter said: "We are heavily dependent on Government funding.

" It's a fact that when the Government makes cuts we are the ones left having to explain them and implement them.

"The scale of that is unprecedented and the savagery is appalling.

"These decisions are not good ones. There are no good decisions, but we must make the best of the very serious situation we are in."

From April, council tax in Leicester will rise by 1.97 per cent.

A 4.1 per cent rise in council tenants' rents had been proposed but that was reduced to a 3.4 per cent increase.

Tory-run Leicestershire County Council has also passed a budget with heavy cuts.

Senior Conservatives said they needed to save £79 million over the next four years but are still unsure where £30 million of those cuts will come from.

At a meeting on Wednesday, Conservative leader Coun Nick Rushton said: "We face unprecedented financial changes but I'm proud of what this group has done.

"No matter who wins in May, no matter who comes back in charge, the money will stay the same.

"We've had to look and think about things we've never had to think about before.

"It needs us all to work together to achieve this."

The Lib Dems proposed two amendments to the budget – £50,000 to be set aside to explore installing solar panels on council buildings and adding more than £1 million to the highway maintenance budget for repairs.

Neither was accepted.

Liberal Democrat leader Simon Galton criticised the council for having £99 million in reserves.

He accepted some reserves were needed, but said: "We've got to start thinking about how we can use reserves to protect services.

"If there is going to be a cross-party discussion there has to be a willingness to look at other ways this council can raise money to use in order to protect front-line services.

"That is the bit we are not feeling satisfied about."

Leicester police relaunch search for alleged sex attacker Kamaljit Singh

Police have relaunched the hunt for an alleged sex attacker who fled justice 12 years ago.

Officers said they were reissuing an appeal to track down Kamaljit Singh (46) after recently uncovering a picture of him.

He was arrested in 2000 and charged with five counts of indecent assault but failed to appear at court when requested.

The alleged offences were committed in Beaumont Leys, Leicester, in 2000.

PC Aran Gibbs, one of the officers involved in the search, said: "The image we have of Singh is now 12 years old, so he may look slightly different.

"However, it is likely his face shape and features will have remained the same.

"Singh, like all other people who are charged for an offence, should appear in court and complete the justice process.

"Since Singh's disappearance, we have carried out extensive inquiries to locate him. We have carried out work to identify addresses and people we believe are linked to him.

"We will continue to do all we can to find Singh. But if you can help us please don't hesitate to get in touch.

"Just because the offences happened 12 years ago, it doesn't mean that he shouldn't face justice."

People who recognise Singh or know where he lives are asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Boxing: Sweet smell of success in the air for title-hope Louis

Louis '2 Sweet' Norman would rather get punched in the face than play for Nottingham Forest!

As a schoolboy, Norman was a promising left-back and had trials at Forest, but he instead chose boxing and has the biggest fight of his exciting ring career on Sunday.

The teenage talent squares up to Mohammad Waqas for the vacant British Masters flyweight championship in Whitwick – eight miles from his Shepshed home – in what looks like a 50-50 clash between unbeaten prospects.

"I could have carried on playing football and probably made a lot of money," said Norman.

"But it's not all about the money. I box because I want to be a champion.

"I did enjoy playing football, but I was always getting injured.

"I ended up in hospital every week, and I've never even had a bloody nose in a fight!"

Norman has a super-slick, hit-and-don't-get hit style that has taken him to three straight wins as a professional.

He has talent outside the ring as well, as the 19-year-old says he plans to celebrate winning the title with a sing-song at his local.

"I like a bit of karaoke, even though I can't sing much," he said.

"I'll be at the Red Lion after the fight singing That's Life by Frank Sinatra. It's always a good laugh."

Rendall Munroe may join Norman for a post-fight drink having come out of retirement to help his former stable-mate's big-fight preparations.

They have sparred together at the Shinfields' gym in Somercotes and Norman said: "Rendall has been such a massive help.

"I wouldn't be where I am today without him.

"I'm hoping I can fill his shoes and, hopefully, go even further than him and win the world title.

"It's not impossible, if I work hard and believe in myself."

Norman's first target is the British Masters belt.

Waqas was a good amateur with South Bank ABC in Middlesbrough. He reached the ABA light-flyweight final in 2011, and has won all four professional fights.

"Whoever wins is going to take a step nearer the British title," said Norman.

"I'm 100 per cent certain it's going to be me. We've got the game-plan right.

"I'm fit enough to work for three minutes of every round, and I'm ready to go into the later rounds.

"People are saying it's a 50-50 fight, but I can only see one winner – and that's me."

Speedway: Leicester Lions makes changes to Beaumont Park track

Leicester Lions are cutting corners in a bid for Premier League success.

Work has begun to alter their Beaumont Park track. A group of volunteers has been helping to re-shape the entry into the first bend and the exit leading off the pits turn.

This weekend, weather permitting, changes will be made to turns three and four.

"We first floated the idea of changing the track shape with the team during last summer but decided to defer the project until the winter months," said Lions co-promoter Alan Jones.

"After an indifferent start in the League Cup competition, when we lost at home to Ipswich and Somerset, results improved and the question was posed at a time when the team was on a winning sequence in the Premier League.

"The riders did not want to lose their home-track knowledge and were concerned that results could slip. So they asked us to leave the shape just as it was until the end of the season, so that's what we did."

For the first time in 35 years of competitive racing, Lions won all 12 of last season's league fixtures at Beaumont Park, plus both their play-off clashes.

Fans will be hoping for more of the same when the new season revs into action next month. They will, however, be wondering if the track changes will have a bearing on home advantage.

Jones believes that will not be the case, and said: "It won't make any difference to the riders. They will have plenty of chances to try out the circuit before the season starts.

"The fact is that the exit and entry lanes needed to be wider to create more racing lines. And from a spectator's point of view, it will increase the excitement."

If the work is completed on schedule, there will be sufficient time for the new inner lines to settle before the Lions' pre-season opening, the East Midlands Bowl challenge against near-neighbours and great rivals Coventry Bees, on Saturday, March 16.

Injury rules out Matty James for Leicester City's trip to Blackpool

Leicester City will be without midfielder Matty James for tomorrow's trip to Blackpool.

The former Manchester United youth product picked up a knee injury during Tuesday's home defeat to Charlton Athletic.

Andy King is expected to replace James in central midfield alongside Danny Drinkwater.

"We are pretty free of injuries but it looks like we will be without Matty James for the weekend, which is disappointing," said City boss Nigel Pearson.

"He has a sore knee, which is unfortunate. We can't see one particular incident where he has picked that up. We will see how he is over the next few days.

"He is a good player and I think he has done excellently for us this season. But, having said that, we have competition in that area. While I am disappointed for the lad, we will overcome it."

After two consecutive league defeats, and the FA Cup exit at the hands of Huddersfield sandwiched between, Pearson said his players must rediscover the form which saw them rise to second in the Championship when they face Paul Ince's Seasiders.

City have slipped to fifth in the table, while second-placed Hull have now opened up a nine-point gap over them ahead of this weekend's fixtures.

Pearson admitted his side have looked out of sorts over the past three games but said they can soon get back to the form which saw them win five consecutive games after Boxing Day.

"We have to get back to winning ways, it's as simple as that," he said.

"To do that it will be based on hard work and the values that have formed the foundation of our season so far.

"Our work ethic has been very high. Unfortunately, certainly on Tuesday, we have looked a little bit out of sorts. Sometimes that happens."

City's trip to face league leaders Cardiff City has been rescheduled again.

The fixture has been brought forward to Tuesday, March 12, having been put back to April 9, because of the FA Cup.

The date has become available because of Barnsley's FA Cup trip against Manchester City on March 9, which has postponed their visit to Cardiff.

The two clubs have agreed to bring the game forward to ease fixture congestion and it means City now avoid three consecutive away trips in nine days, as they were due to travel to south Wales after trips to Barnsley and Brighton.

Football: Leicester referee Kevin Friend can't wait to blow whistle on Capital One Cup final

Despite Leicester City being knocked out of the FA Cup last week, the county will still have a representative in a domestic cup final this season.

Leicester referee Kevin Friend has been chosen to officiate Sunday's Capital One Cup final between Swansea and Bradford at Wembley.

Friend, who lives in the city, was selected based on his impressive performances throughout the season.

His appointment is yet another high-profile game to add to the 41-year-old's list, having refereed this season's Community Shield between Manchester City and Chelsea.

"It is one of the major championship finals in the country, so it will be a very proud moment for me," said Friend.

"A referee's ambitions are to be involved in the leading domestic football finals – this and the FA Cup final.

"Along with the Community Shield final I refereed last year, this is definitely the highlight of my career."

Friend started refereeing in 1985, at the age of 14, and has been on the elite Select Group list since the start of the 2009-10 season.

It will not be the first time he has refereed at England's biggest footballing stage.

He refereed at Wembley for the FA Vase final in 2009, between Whitley Bay and Glossop North End.

So, is the Leicester referee nervous, excited, or looking forward to the biggest day in his career so far?

"All three," he said. "Everyone gets nervous, I get nervous before every game. I refereed in a park game the other weekend and I still felt the nerves. But that's just part-and-parcel of the game.

"But once you get to the ground, you start to calm down a little bit with the environment of the changing rooms.

"Once you cross that white line, you just get into reffing mode."

As hard as it may seem, Friend said he will not be overawed by the occasion.

"You just have to treat it like any other game," he said.

"I have refereed both sides before, so I know them both well. It helps because I know them and they know me.

"They know how I referee, so they know what to expect."

It will be a proud moment not just for Friend but also for his family, who will be at Wembley on Sunday to watch the big game.

He said: "My wife, Rachel, will be coming down to watch along with my two daughters, Jodie, who's 10, and Lauren who is three. It will be Lauren's first ever game, too.

"Jodie's first game was also at Wembley, when I refereed the FA Vase final in 2009."

However, you will not be seeing Friend refereeing at the King Power Stadium any time soon as he is not allowed to officiate in games involving teams he supports.

"I have got two teams, Bristol City, because I was born in Bristol, and also Leicester because I live here," he said.

"I do go down to the King Power quite a bit. They have got a good bunch of lads at the minute and a really good manager in Nigel Pearson – they will succeed.

"Everyone in football always wants it now but, sometimes, it takes a little bit more time to get it right, and it looks like they have."

Travelling criminal gangs blamed for 47 mobile phone thefts in Leicester bars and clubs

Travelling criminal gangs are being blamed for the theft of 47 mobile phones from people in bars and clubs over the past three weekends.

At least two gangs have targeted busy city centre venues.

Police urged people heading for the city centre this weekend to keep their phones secure at all times, ideally in a zipped-up bag or inside pocket.

The message was echoed by bar owners and security staff.

Police raised the alarm three weeks ago when it emerged 18 phones had been stolen at licensed premises in one weekend.

The following weekend, 16 phones were taken and last weekend 13 were stolen.

Officers said they would normally expect four or five such thefts at city centre venues in the course of a weekend.

City centre police commander Inspector Chris Cockerill said there had been a similar spate of thefts last summer.

"Last year, we had arrests in places such as Sheffield and London where officers stopped vehicles and found bags of phones which had been stolen in Leicester," he said.

"The people who are committing these thefts are organised and they travel to different towns and cities. They are looking for dark, busy venues where it's generally a younger crowd.

"They are very proficient at what they do and it only takes them a split second to take a phone, a wallet or a purse if given the opportunity."

Last weekend, officers arrested four men and a woman.

Three of the arrests followed a tip-off from CCTV operators, while two men were detained when security staff at Walkabout bar, in Granby Street, called police after spotting them behaving suspiciously.

A number of phones and SIM cards were recovered.

The five, who were from the West Midlands and Northampton, have been released on bail.

Chris Brannigan, general manager at Walkabout, said: "Phone theft can happen in any bar, but we're determined it's not going to happen here.

"Our bar and security teams are on the lookout for suspicious behaviour and we'll have no hesitation in calling the police if we spot anything.

"We would also urge people to be careful with their belongings when they're out this weekend, wherever they are, and if they see anything suspicious to report it to us or the police."

Citywatch, of which many city pubs and clubs are members, is also working with police.

Mark Williamson, of Citywatch, said: "We have a network of 60 bars and clubs linked to each other and to the city's CCTV room.

"If any of our members spots thieves at work, we will report it immediately and there is a good chance they will be caught on video."

Police urged people to download GPS tracking programmes for their phones.

The technology enables police to trace the exact location of stolen handsets.

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson said the capture of teenage striker Harry Kane will strengthen his attacking options during the vital promotion run-in.

The 19-year-old joined City on loan from Tottenham for the rest of the season, and will go straight into the squad for tomorrow's trip to Blackpool.

Kane's arrival means Pearson now has six strikers to choose from as City look to get their automatic promotion challenge back on track at Bloomfield Road.

Pearson said the signing will give his squad a boost after they suffered three consecutive defeats.

"Harry will hopefully bring more goals and fresh impetus," said Pearson.

"It keeps the competition for places strong.

"He is a player we know quite a lot about. I am delighted that we have been able to secure him for our squad.

"Hopefully, it will be a positive move all around. With loan deals, everyone wins.

"For us at this stage of the season, I have always said that, if we are to bring anyone in, they have to improve us, and I think he does that.

"He can play as a wide striker or central striker, and he is a decent size as well. We have got another option in forward positions.

"It is always important that if you bring any players in on loan, they have to have a hunger for success.

"I am confident we have got another player coming into our ranks who will bring a lot of positive qualities to the squad.

"We have had the opportunity to bring him in and I am very happy we have been able to do that."

Kane, who has been capped 14 times at under-19 level by England and has scored six goals, came through the youth ranks at White Hart Lane.

He has made just one Premier League appearance for Spurs but has played in the Europa League for them this season, and has previously gained experience during loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall and Norwich.

He scored for Millwall in the 2-1 defeat of City at the New Den in April last year.

Kane also made five appearances for the Canaries this season before being recalled by Spurs.

Murder inquiry after woman's body found in flat in Loughborough

Police have launched a murder investigation after a woman's body was found inside a flat.

Paramedics discovered the woman in a second-floor flat in Gallico Close, Loughborough, shortly after 8pm on Wednesday.

It was unclear last night who called the East Midlands Ambulance Service crew to the scene and why.

The woman was expected to be formally identified last night or early today, once the results of a post-mortem examination were known.

Leicestershire Police said detectives were waiting to speak to a 30-year-old man about the woman's death.

The man was in hospital last night and unfit to be interviewed.

The nature of his illness has not been released.

Yesterday, police community support officers were stationed at the front of the flat while officers carried out door-to-door inquiries.

Neighbours reacted with shock to the news.

Gary Brooker, 46, was picking his daughter up from school yesterday when he heard about the death.

Mr Brooker, who lives in nearby Charteris Close, said: "Years ago, this area used to have a bad reputation. People used to call it Colditz because of the way it looked.

"But things have changed a lot up here and it is a nice place to live, with lots of families.

"That's why it's such a shock to hear that a woman has died and the police are saying it's murder."

Another neighbour, who lives in the same block as the woman, said: "I didn't know her very well but she seemed like a nice person and seemed to keep herself to herself.

"It's awful to think that someone has died like this so close by."

Another resident said: "This is a quiet area but it seems even more quiet today.

"People are beginning to hear now that a woman has died and that the police are saying she has been murdered.

"I think there's a general shock around the place, even though most people don't seem to have known this poor woman."

Detective Chief Inspector Simon Cure, who is leading the investigation into the woman's death, stressed inquiries were in their early stages.

He said: "I would like speak to anyone who saw someone coming and going from the address between Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon.

"Did you see or hear anything unusual?

"Any information could help with our inquiries."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Leicestershire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers, which is anonymous, on 0800 555111.

Face of the teenager Liam Evans who slashed shop assistant and police officer with knife in Co-op, Humberstone

This is the teenager who slashed the necks of a shop assistant who tried to stop him stealing beer and the police officer who arrested him.

Liam Evans was jailed for five years last week for wounding the two men after he was caught stealing two crates of beer from the Co-op store, in Thurmaston Lane, Humberstone, Leicester.

Leicester Crown Court heard both men could have suffered more serious injuries if Evans had not been drunk at the time.

The Leicester Mercury successfully applied, in the public interest, for the lifting of a court order which previously banned the media from naming Evans, who is a juvenile.

Leicestershire Police released a custody photograph of Evans (17), of Pindar Road, New Parks, following a request by the Mercury. Detective Constable Nick Evans, who investigated the case, said: "This was a particularly nasty and shocking incident.

"Thankfully, the victims did not suffer more serious injuries, but the consequences of Evans's actions could have been far worse." Ivan Stafford, chairman of Leicestershire Police Federation, said: "This case is a reminder of the dangers out there for police officers and, in this instance, for people working in shops, too.

"I have seen the report of the things he said and the arrogance of this criminal is breath-taking."

Leicester Crown Court was told Evans went to the shop and stole two crates of beer at 10pm on September 15 last year,

The teenager slashed a male employee who asked him to return the crates, leaving a one-inch wide gash in his neck.

Police arrived and found Evans and four other youths drinking the stolen beer.

While trying to arrest the teenager, the police officer suffered a three-inch gash on the back of his neck when Evans swung out with his knife.

After his arrest, the court heard Evans bragged to the injured officer's colleagues: "I tried to kill a copper tonight. I would have killed him if I hadn't dropped the knife. When I get out of prison I will murder one of you. You're lucky no one died today."

Evans admitted two counts of wounding with intent and possession of the knife.

He also admitted possessing a larger kitchen knife in a public place nine days earlier.

Evans pleaded guilty to a house burglary in Whiles Lane, Birstall, when jewellery and cash totalling £1,600 were stolen, on September 3.

He confessed to 17 other offences, which he asked to be considered, including 14 house burglaries.

Philip Gibbs, mitigating, told the court: "He has indicated remorse and a desire to lead a non-criminal lifestyle in future."

Judge Michael Pert QC, sentencing, told Evans, who has 65 offences on his criminal record: "You could be facing a more serious charge, had you not had so much to drink and your aim had been better.

"You could be before me today facing a charge of murder."
